Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey is having a minute right now. From gearing up to star in his own Yellowstone spin-off series to becoming the King of Rock and Roll in Netflix’s Agent Elvis, the True Detective actor will stop at nothing to amaze us with his captivating acting chops. McConaughey’s next project will see him leading the cast of an upcoming crime thriller Rivals of Amziah King, which will take place in rural Oklahoma. Written and directed by Andrew Patterson, this new crime thriller stars McConaughey in the titular role of Amziah King and will be produced by Black Bear Pictures and Heyday Films.

Black Bear International is all set to commence the international pre-sales at the upcoming Cannes film market while WME Independent is handling U.S. rights. While nothing much has been revealed plot-wise, a press release did mention that the movie will be a “deeply atmospheric, character-focused crime thriller set against the unique backdrop of remote Oklahoma.” David Heyman is all set to produce the film via his Heyday Films and will be joined by Teddy Schwarzman and Michael Heimler from Black Bear.
During the reveal, Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman said, “Black Bear is thrilled to partner with our friends at Heyday in supporting the bold creation that will be ‘The Rivals of Amziah King. Andrew Patterson’s visionary filmmaking and Matthew McConaughey’s extraordinary talent are sure to deliver audiences a truly original and compelling film.” Heyday’s Rob Silva along with Black Bear’s John Friedberg and Christopher Casanova will serve as executive producers for the project. No cast details except for McConaughey have been shared and currently, there are no first-look or trailers for the movie.
Rivals of Amziah King will be Andrew Patterson’s second project following his brilliant feature debut, ‘The Vast of Night’ which premiered at the 2019 Slamdance Film Festival and was later picked up by Amazon Studios worldwide. “When I first watched ‘The Vast of Night,’ it was clear me that Andrew Patterson was a remarkable talent with a singular vision,” Heyman of Heyday Films remarked. “I am incredibly excited to be working with Andrew and to support him and Matthew as they bring Amziah to life and make what I believe will be an extraordinary film.”
