Matthew McConaughey’s ‘Yellowstone’ Spin-Off Series is Officially Happening

The rumors are true after all. Academy Award-winner Matthew McConaughey is officially getting his own Yellowstone spinoff series, expanding the already massive western franchise (which we’ve dubbed The Wrangler-verse). Paramount Media Networks chief Chris McCarthy confirmed the news, telling The Hollywood Reporter that a McConaughey-led Yellowstone spinoff is “in the works” and will move on irrespective of Kevin Costner’s involvement with the franchise.

While McCarthy didn’t delve into the nitty-gritty, he did share that there are “more than 10 projects” he and Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan have in store, which means it might not be the last of the Dutton family.

With Costner’s sudden departure and the original series coming to a close, it looks like Taylor Sheridan and McCarthy are pondering more ways to expand the franchise and tell more interesting stories set within the universe. Sheridan has already developed two spin-off/prequel series thus far, 1883 and 1923.

Currently, no cast or plot details have been shared but Deadline has reported that Sheridan is set to write and the series will take place either on “the Dutton ranch in Montana or elsewhere.” It’s also expected that McConaughey will be “joined by handful of original Yellowstone cast members;” however, we have no idea which characters will be returning.

The prolific Texan actor had been in talks with Taylor Sheridan for a Yellowstone spinoff series for a while now and it looks like the two have finally reached some sort of a middle ground.

When asked whether Kevin Costner would be leaving the series, Paramount Network in an official statement, said, “We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come.”

The network further went on to add, “Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner.”

Details surrounding the McConaughey-led spinoff series are light and it’s currently unclear how far along the show has reached internally. However, given Sheridan’s creative calibre and his penchant to come up with gripping stories and characters, we are sure that the next chapter of the Dutton saga will be packed with mayhem, action and a whole lot of drama.
