With Sicario 3 finally gaining momentum, franchise producers Molly Smith and Trent Luckinbill recently dropped hints that the talented trio of Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio Del Toro are currently in talks to reprise their respective roles, promising an electrifying sequel that series fans have eagerly awaited.
In a recent conversation with Collider, producers Trent Luckinbill and Molly Smith discussed the possibility of a third film and shared their vision for it, which includes not only the return of the characters (and actors) portrayed by Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin but also Emily Blunt’s character, who has been absent since the original film in 2015. Smith expressed, “Our idea is to get the cast back together with Benicio, Emily, and Josh, and we’ve got a great story to tell.”

Trent Luckinbill and Molly Smith, who also serve as producers for the latest Netflix crime thriller Reptile, which (not so) coincidently stars Benicio Del Toro, mentioned the actor’s close connection to the project. Molly Smith told Collider, “Benicio, by nature of just working with us most recently, has been probably the closest to it at the moment. But we’re keeping all the talent informed. They’ve stayed close to it.”
Smith further went on to add, “Like Trent said, the strike has just slowed us down a bit on this last draft, but I think everybody is very excited. Everyone sort of knows the framework of the story and is very excited to, hopefully, get our shooting draft in order very soon.”
Besides the fact that Sicario 3 is officially in the works with a possibility of the original trio returning, all other details about the film remain under wraps. However, Josh Brolin, who plays CIA officer Matt Graver in the Sicario franchise, hinted to The Hollywood Reporter in May 2022 that the threequel had already been penned. He stated, “It’s out there. We think it deserves a third one if we can make it in the way that we want to make it.”
As expected, the yet-to-be-named third movie doesn’t have a release date on the horizon. The ongoing strikes involving writers and actors have dealt a considerable blow to the project, leaving the development of the third film in limbo.
Plot-wise, Sicario 3 is highly likely to centre around Benicio del Toro’s character, Alejandro Gillick, although nothing has been officially confirmed. Producer Basil Iwanyk shared his excitement and belief that Benicio’s portrayal of Gillick never gets old and that fans can’t seem to get enough of it.
Iwanyk said, “I can’t wait for Sicario 3. I could watch Benicio play that guy forever. I mean, I can watch Benicio in anything, but with that character, it doesn’t get old.”
