Ten-time NBA All-Star and triple Olympic gold medallist Carmelo Anthony is set to make a triumphant return to Australia this September. The basketball legend has officially announced a four-date tour across Melbourne and Perth that features two speaking events and two basketball camps. An Australian-first, the upcoming tour offers a rare chance to learn firsthand from one of the greatest scorers to ever step foot on the court.
On Tuesday, 17 September, Melo will appear at The Timber Yard in Port Melbourne for An Evening with Carmelo Anthony before taking the show on the road to the Metro City Concert Club in Perth on Sunday, 22 September. The live ticketed events will see the NBA icon share intimate and personal stories from his time in the league, discuss his journey in the NBA, and ruminate on life both on and off the court. Guests will also be able to speak directly with Anthony through a rare Q&A session.
“You’ll hear exclusive stories about my career, me personally, you get to ask me questions about your favourite moments, take pictures and, you know, throw a little bit more in there,” Anthony said in a YouTube video promoting the event.
From 18 September to 21 September, Melo will also host a series of basketball camps, inviting spiring players to head down and learn directly from the master of the mid-range. Across 13 basketball & performance stations, personally guided by Anthony, participants will gain insights into his techniques, strategies, and deep passion for the game.
In addition to the speaking and camp events, Melo will also be making his way to Perth on September 19 for HoopsFest, the NBL’s monster opening round event. Featuring five games across the weekend, the Cygnett WNBL tournament, the Foot Locker U18 club championships, a dedicated fan zone and a headline set from DJ Hayden James, HoopsFest promises to be the biggest basketball event ever held in Australia.
“Having Carmelo Anthony attend HoopsFest to help launch the season is a massive coup for the NBL, and another reason why the weekend will be the biggest in Australian basketball history,” NBL CEO David Stevenson said. “Carmelo has an authentic and genuine interest in growing the NBL and showcasing it on the world stage. This is evident by both his role with the Next Stars program, as well as him travelling to Perth to engage with the league.
“The NBL is already the second-best league in the world, and having people of Carmelo’s stature involved solidifies the competition’s standing and reputation on the global landscape. We can’t wait to have Carmelo courtside for the season opener, while giving our passionate fans attending HoopsFest the opportunity to see an NBA legend.”
The announcement of Carmelo Anthony’s Australian tour comes off the back of recent reports that the NBA legend is looking to get into the ownership game. Earlier this year, the National Basketball League (NBL) announced that Anthony would become a future owner of an expansion team in the league, whilst also serving as a global ambassador for the NBL’s Next Stars program. The one-year fast-track program is responsible for producing a string of NBA players in recent years, including LaMelo Ball, Josh Giddey and Ousmane Dieng, and 2024 No. 1 pick, Alexandre Sarr.
“It’s time that the rest of the world knows exactly what’s happening over there in Australia and the excitement from around the rest of the world that’s happening for the NBL,” Anthony told sport and culture publication Andscape in January. “The NBA draft is about to happen. So, you’ll start seeing, those pipelines of players coming from the Stars program here to the NBA. There is just a lot of excitement around it. I get a chance to be a part of it in a very integral way, in a very pivotal way where we’re opening up doors and connecting players, we’re connecting the game of basketball from a global standpoint. I’m excited about it.”
Originally from Brooklyn, Anthony is widely regarded as one of the most formidable basketballers of all time. Across 19 seasons in the NBA, the small forward notched an incredible ten All-Star appearances, six All-NBA selections and one scoring title, most notably with the Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks. In 2021, Anthony was named a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, an honour bestowed upon the top 75 players in NBA history as voted by a panel of reporters, current and former players, coaches, general managers, and team executives.
Tickets for An Evening with Carmelo Anthony are available now, with prices starting from AUD$49.95. You can also sign up for the NBA legend’s basketball camps, with tickets available from AUD$399. For more information, visit Megatix.
