You don’t need to follow golf to feel this one. When someone like Tiger Woods steps back like this, it cuts through the sport pretty quickly.
Woods has announced he’s stepping away from golf “for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health,” following a recent car crash in Florida that led to DUI-related charges. In a statement, he said he understands “the seriousness of the situation” and wants to prioritise his wellbeing and work towards “lasting recovery.”
Just days earlier, details of the crash began to emerge. According to authorities, Woods’ vehicle clipped a trailer, flipped and left him needing help to climb out. Officers noted signs of impairment at the scene, although no alcohol was detected in his breath. Woods said he had taken prescription medication earlier that day and declined further testing.
For anyone who’s followed his career, none of this exists in isolation. Woods spent years dealing with serious injuries, multiple surgeries, and the wear and tear that comes with competing at such a high level, as well as numerous high-profile personal scandals.
If Tiger Woods never returns to golf, he will already retire as one of the all-time greats, with 82 PGA Tour victories – tying him for the most in history – and 15 major championships, a feat surpassed only by Jack Nicklaus. Woods spent a staggering 683 weeks as World Number One, and is the only golfer to have completed a career grand slam three times. You can read his full career accomplishments below.
