Nike Tom Sachs ‘General Purpose Shoe’ is Boring

Embodying the idea that footwear should be the least important decision you make each day, Tom Sachs’s latest NikeCraft sneaker took out a full-page spread in the New York Times to tell us just how boring they are. Officially referred to as the NikeCraft General Purpose 8 Types of Loafers for Men and How to Wear Them (GPS) the sneaker is intentionally boring, simple, and something that sneakerheads can’t wait to get their hands on when they release on June 10th 2022 for $109.99 USD.

Price: $109.99 USD

Design

While it might look basic on the surface, Tom Sachs claims the General Purpose Shoes took “10 years to make” due to their simplicity. The upper of the shoe resembles a Nike Killshot OG with a redesigned toe-box and heel detail that is larger, more structured, and squared off. It’s finished in an off-white colour that is clearly designed to be dirtied with daily wear and the classic Tom Sachs blue pull tabs return to the tongue and heel. The midsole is a tall and functional three-piece moulded cup unit with a grippy outsole that resembles a trail runner.

The Tom Sachs General Purpose Shoe will release first a launch colourway (the Studio) with the gum sole and white upper before releasing in multiple colour schemes. It will be available in Women’s sizes 5-14.5, 15.5, and 16.5 and Men’s sizes 3.5-13, 14, and 15.

Inspiration

It sounds to us like Tom Sachs was inspired by the idea of Steve Jobs’s blue jeans, black long-sleeve, and grey New Balance 992 fatigue that he made so famous. The spread in the New York Times (below) makes the statement clear; “They do their job so you can do yours. You put them on and forget about them. You focus on getting a little bit faster, a little bit sharper, on finding the signal in the noise.”

In an interview with Nike, Tom Sachs spoke about the simplicity of the shoe and how he got involved with the brand 10-years after the first shoe was released; “I got involved with Nike in the beginning because we wanted to make a sculpture that everyone could wear. It’s a tool for everyday life; it’s democratic,” said Sachs.

The shoe has become the new uniform colourway for the Tom Sachs Studio team, and could become yours too when it releases on June 10th 2022. We anticipate this sneaker to be far easier to come by than any Tom Sachs sneaker of the past (no SPACECAMP training needed) and you can get your hands on it via the link below.
