It’s a bit of an understatement to say that Wheels and Waves is a festival like no other. Held every June, the festival is hosted in Biarritz, a resort town on France’s Basque coast. Thousands gather there to celebrate the motorcycle, surf, and skateboard lifestyle. At this year’s festival, Swiss luxury watchmaker Breitling served as the Official Timekeeper, an office the company will hold for the course of a three-year partnership with the festival.
The watchmaker marked the honour with the release of its Premier Wheels and Waves Limited Edition Watch.
“At Wheels and Waves,” states Georges Kern, Breitling CEO, “we highlighted the passions we share with the festival: a cool, laid-back surfing lifestyle and sporty, elegant motorbikes. It also gave us a chance to introduce ourselves to people who, like us, are driven by action, purpose, and style—and we launched a watch that celebrates the festival that expresses those values.
The limited-edition watch comes in two styles. The first is an 18k red gold version that will be limited to just 100 pieces; the second is a stainless steel version that will see 500 examples issued. The watches measure 42mm, are COSC-certified, and feature an anthracite dial with gold hour markers and hands and a red seconds hand.
The white inner bezel shows a black tachymeter scale with a red tachymeter inscription. Black subdials—a chronograph minute counter at 3 o’clock and a seconds subdial at 9 o’clock—provide a handsome contrast with the nubuck leather strap.
Breitling used an in-house mechanical movement for the watch, which is visible through the transparent case back. It features a 70-hour power reserve. The case back also features the watch’s number in the series. Kern points out that, “With this chronograph, we have created a very special version of our Premier, which is Breitling’s most elegant watch family. At the same time, they reflect the things we love about Wheels and Waves: the energy, the lifestyle, and, as I’ve said before, the coolness.”
