Omega has taken note of professional golfer Rory McIlroy and his many stunning accomplishments on the green, creating a special edition specifically for him. “In particular,” notes the watchmaker’s description of the Omega Speedmaster 57 Co-Axial Chronograph 41.5 mm Rory McIlroy Special Edition, “it celebrates the incredible course record of 61 he shot at Royal Portrush Golf Club at age 16—a moment that helped ignite his career.”

As noted in the name, the Speedmaster 57 Co Axial Chronograph comes in a 41.5mm case, which for the McIlroy version is done in 18K yellow gold. A matching bracelet keeps the watch on your wrist, and the tachymeter bezel is also done in gold. The dial is a sun-brushed champagne realised in PVD yellow gold. A blackened outer ring adds a classy touch and harkens back to the original 1957 Speedmaster. The dial feature a date window at six o’clock, as well as a small-seconds counter at nine o’clock and a 12-hour and 60-minute chronograph recorder at three o’clock.
If you’re able to get your hands on one of these watches, make sure to view it under UV light as the subdials will reveal the numbers 16 and 61. For the movement, Omega went with the Omega Co-Axial calibre 9301. This is a self-winding chronograph featuring a Si14 Silicium balance spring. It also has a co-axial escapement, two barrels, a column wheel, and a vertical clutch. The case back is transparent and lets you take a look at the watch’s inner workings.
The good news is that you don’t have to play like McIlroy to get one of these watches on your wrist. Omega is making the Speedmaster 57 Co Axial Chronograph Rory McIlroy Special Edition available to anyone who can afford the USD$34,600 price tag.
