  • The OMEGA Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite has been launched globally.

It never ceases to amaze how, year after year, OMEGA finds new and interesting ways to extend the enduring legacy of the Speedmaster. The chronograph collection’s rich legacy needs little introduction, courtesy of a few high-profile trips to the edge of our known universe, and yet, the Swiss maison is not content with simply riding on the coattails of the past. Its latest watch proves exactly that.

To kick off the calendar year with a bang, OMEGA has unveiled an entirely new Speedmaster model that answers one of the range’s long-lingering question marks. For the first time ever, the new Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite offers a dual-hemisphere moonphase display on the meteorite-adorned dial, powered by a completely new movement. Looks like 2025 is off to a cracking start.

Dial and Case

Released with two references, the OMEGA Speedmaster Meteorite Moonphase pieces arrive in 43mm stainless steel cases. Interestingly, the brand has dropped the traditionally bulky diameter sizes, opting instead to increase the ergonomics by slimming the case down to a meagre 13.6mm. While only a footnote in the spec sheet, it represents an enormous win for the average wearer who previously struggled to justify the Speedmaster Moonphase’s hulking frame.

The star of the show, however, remains the dial. Both references utilise two forms of meteorite on the watch face, with the iron meteorite fragments revealing a pattern of “ribbon-like flecks” that give each timepiece a unique finish. From here, OMEGA has coloured the iron meteorite with either a black PVD or galvanic grey coating, which provides a subtle hue that perfectly contrasts the rough texture of the ancient material. Both pieces’ polished-brushed stainless steel case is lined with a ceramic bezel ring in either black or blue, with a contrasting white enamel tachymeter scale.

Admittedly, this isn’t OMEGA’s first foray into the world of meteorite dials. Last year’s Constellation collection compiled trace elements from the famed Swedish meteorite, Muonionalusta; however, the new Speedmaster brings something different to the table.

According to OMEGA, at 6 o’clock, the Moonphase indication shows two cabochon Moons, which have been crafted from genuine pieces of Moon meteorite. As they turn, the moons reveal the changing illuminations observed in the northern and southern hemispheres, along with a subtle nod to the Speedmaster’s illustrious past.

The brand explained that the stars in the background are positioned exactly as they were on the night that Apollo 11 reached the Moon in 1969 – as seen from OMEGA’s watchmaking home in Bienne, Switzerland. The dial also features a 3 o’clock subdial which offers a 60-minute and 12-hour recorder, while at 9 o’clock, there is a Small Seconds subdial with a date display featuring a red anodized aluminium hand.

Calibre 9914 Movement

For the latest Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite references, OMEGA has developed an entirely new hand-wound movement, the aptly named calibre 9914, and it is a work of art, in and of itself. Featuring the same arced striping and finishing across the full plate that we’ve come to expect from the Swiss watchmaker, calibre 9914 is a prime example of OMEGA’s quest to fuse precision and style.

The manual-winding co-axial master chronometer movement is anti-magnetic to 15,000 gauss, as certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), and is visible through the flat sapphire crystal on the caseback. OMEGA claims the movement will provide 60 hours of power reserve and an accuracy of 0/+5 seconds per day. Further, the brand’s decision to opt for a hand-wound movement over an automatic has shaved a few grams off the overall weight, again adding to the timepiece’s wearability and ergonomics.
