Omega moonswatch ranking

Ranking Every OMEGA x Swatch ‘MoonSwatch’

When Swatch and OMEGA announced they were collaborating for an affordable take on the classic OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch it sent the watch world into a frenzy and stole the show at Watches and Wonders – the biggest event on the watch calendar. It promptly caused chaos at Swatch boutiques worldwide as people clamoured for this cut-price AU$380 look-a-like.

The line-up of planet-inspired pieces was originally released on March 26th 2022, but getting your hands on a watch at release was next to impossible. Luckily, we’ve managed to wrangle some from our friends at Swatch and we’re ranking all of the original releases in our article below, with limited-edition models included at the end, including the new Mission to the Moonphase ‘Snoopy’ that was released in March 2024.

Core Collection OMEGA x MoonSwatch Models

We’ve ranked the core collection of OMEGA x MoonSwatch watches below. Every Omega MoonSwatch is the same size, features the same Bioceramic construction, and has the same VELCRO strap with Omega and Swatch branding. The sizing is also the same across the board and measures 42mm in diameter, 13.25mm in thickness, and 47.30mm in height.

Since the release of the core range, we’ve seen multiple iterations of the highly sought-after ‘Mission to the Moon’ model with the chronograph seconds hand taking the form of strawberries to autumnal barley grain and we’ve updated this article to reflect those new limited-edition references at the end.

1. Mission to Mercury

Out of all the MoonSwatch watches, it was the ‘Mercury’ that the Man of Many teams voted as the overarching favourite. While the Mission to Moon might appear as the closest thing to a ‘real’ Omega Moonwatch, the Mission to Mercury has the perfect combination of black and grey. We love how the black bezel and subdials are balanced by the grey on the dial and strap. White hands and indices are a nice touch, but we’d probably swap out the grey strap with a black NATO if we had it our way.

2. Mission to Saturn

Call it the Butterfly Effect, but everything brown, beige, and sandy is in fashion right now thanks to Travis Scott. And while he might prefer to rock rare and sought-after pieces that are simply unobtainable, the Mission to Saturn MoonSwatch might be the next best thing. Maybe the most distinctive piece in the Omega x Swatch collection, this one sits at the pointy end of the list for the Saturn subdial alone. This is quickly accompanied by a brown bezel, subdials, and strap. White hands and indices provide the contrast on one of our favourite MoonSwatches.

3. Mission to the Moon

The Mission to the Moon is the one we recommend buying if the future value is something you’re worried about. This is the closest watch to the ‘real thing’ and Swatch makes no mistake with a steel grey case finished with a black VELCRO strap. Look for the “hidden S” integrated into the centre of the crystal, the fine and sophisticated circular pattern on the dial outer ring and the subdials, the sharp and smooth lugs construction, and the iconic “dot over 90” detail on the tachymeter scaled bezel. While watch purists might look at the collection as nothing more than a little ‘fun’ this one takes things a little more seriously.

Jupiter

4. Mission to Jupiter

Our love for beige doesn’t end at the Mission to Saturn. With the Mission to Jupiter, you’ll find all dials carry a beige tone that reminds us of the simple Mission to the Moon reference above. Contrast is found by way of the orange chronograph seconds hand and subdial hands that speak to the planet’s ‘Great Red Spot’, while the black strap is simply the icing on the cake. On the backside of every MoonSwatch is a picture of the planet on which it’s based, with Jupiter and Earth ranking at the top of our list for ‘cool factor’.

Earth

5. Mission on Earth

Speaking of cool factor, there’s nothing cooler than rocking a MoonSwatch to match the planet on which we all walk. Mission to Earth is the starting point for where the collection becomes less serious and more ‘fun’ in the true spirit of Swatch. We love the earthy green Bioceramic case on this one and the colour contrast across the watch dial. The subdials, hour, and minute hand are all finished in a stark white, while the bezel, dial, and strap are found in an ocean blue that we can’t get enough of. While some have suggested that the subdials ought to be colour-matched in blue, we think they look better in white.

6. Mission to Pluto

The Mission to Pluto MoonSwatch combines four major colours and creates a smart and versatile timepiece. Your eye is first drawn to the burgundy tones on the bezel and subdials, while the combination of neutral greys and white on the strap and Bioceramic case have a great balancing act. The beige-coloured dial is the finishing touch that puts this towards the top of our list for those looking to buy two or three Omega x Swatch watches.

Neptune

7. Mission to Neptune

It’s hard to list the Mission to Neptune much further up our rankings as it’s the most expensive to buy on the market. About as intense a colour as you can find, the Neptune boasts deep navy blue tones and a black VELCRO strap making it one of the most recognisable MoonSwatches in the collection.

Venus
Mission to Venus | Image: Man of Many

8. Mission to Venus

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus is how the saying goes and it appears that the OMEGA x Swatch MoonSwatch ‘Mission To Moonshine Gold’ Revealed collection took this mantra and ran with it. The Mission to Venus is delivered here with the most unique set of subdials in the collection, bedazzled in diamond-like details on the edges adding a touch of feminine elegance. We also love the case, hours, minutes, chronograph seconds hand and counter hands that are finished in a lovely pink tone.

As the Mission to Venus MoonSwatch is intended for a female audience, the strap is shorter than all the other MoonSwatches in the collection. It will still fit on the average male wrist but is better suited to a smaller wrist.

Sun

9. Mission to the Sun

While we’d hardly recommend taking a Mission to the Sun, the reflective dial on this MoonSwatch is enough to interest (and divide) the team at Man of Many. The yellow case and dial are hardly offensive in person and would make a great addition to any MoonSwatch buyer’s collection… if you’re a fan of yellow. Not the first colour that comes to mind when we’re purchasing a watch, but this one is true to the spirit of the collection.

10. Mission to Mars

Indeed, the Mission to Mars is here to provide a tribute to the famous Omega Speedmaster Alaska Project (reference 311.32.42.30.04.001 ) but it didn’t garner the votes it deserves amongst the team at Man of Many. Just like the Alaska Project on which it’s based, the watch features a bright red case, while the bezel, dial, and subdials, are all finished in a stark white. The shape of the subdial hands also pays tribute to the Alaska Project.

Uranus

11. Mission to Uranus

The Mission to Uranus is probably the most ‘Swatch’ watch of them all, meaning it’s a fun take on the baby blue dial trend that came with the release of the Tiffany Patek Philippe. The blue and white combination is powerful, however, it’s not one that stood out for the team here at Man of Many. It also rounds out our favourite watches from the OMEGA x Swatch ‘MoonSwatch’ collection. What’s your favourite?

Moonshine Gold OMEGA x MoonSwatch Models

In the time since the core range of OMEGA x MoonSwatches was released, the Swatch Group has added additional limited edition models to the line-up to celebrate significant lunar moments. These came in at a higher price point of AU$435-460 and added ‘Moonshine’ gold to the chronograph seconds hand. This is an 18K yellow gold alloy with a higher resistance to the fading of colour and lustre over time. It uses a mixture of gold, silver, copper, and palladium. Furthermore, these special seconds hands are produced once a month during full moon dates, which the brand says “are known to have a magical influence on many things, humans included.” We just think they look cool.

12. Mission to the Moon Moonshine Gold

Release date: 7 March 2023

The first limited-edition Moonshine Gold MoonSwatch is still the cleanest example with a Moonshine gold chronograph seconds hand as the only stand-out feature compared to the original Mission to the Moon watch. It was released at Swatch flagship stores in Tokyo, Zürich, Milan, and London on the 7th March at 7pm local time and remains a rare MoonSwatch with secondary-market prices around the AU$1,100 mark. The seconds hand was produced under a full moon in the month of February and is documented in the production certificate found in each box.

The follow-up piece was released in 19 locations around the world and replaced the tip of the chronograph seconds hand with pink Super-LumiNova to reference the Pink Full Moon of April when each watch was made. It’s a rarer piece than the first with secondary market prices sitting around AU$800 at the time of publishing.

It’s named after the month when beavers build their dams for winter (November) and features a nibbled chronograph secondhand finished in Moonshine Gold (an exclusive yellow gold alloy). Other than that, well, it’s the same as any other ‘Mission to the Moon’ MoonSwatch. You can pick these up for around $600 AUD on the secondary market at the time of publishing.

Release date: December 2023

We’re not going to put this MoonSwatch in the lineage of great ‘Snowflake’ watches, including the Tudor MN “Snowflake” Submariner and Grand Seiko “Snowflake,” but it’s a classy alternative to the original Moonshine Gold MoonSwatch and comes in at a fraction of the price. You can pick these up for around $600 AUD.

This was Swatch Group’s commemorative effort for Swiss National Day which falls on the 1st of August every year. It featured a Swiss lantern pattern on the chronograph seconds hand and the same 18K Moonshine Gold finish. Prices are sitting around AU$600 online, it’s not a very sought-after MoonSwatch.

Release date: 30 August 2023

The most controversial (and rarest) of all MoonSwatches received an update with a Moonshine Gold chronograph seconds hand and re-ignited people’s appreciation for the series when it was released in August. No longer leaking blue ink onto skin, this updated piece draws inspiration from “the shining moonlight in a dark blue sky,” and has gone on to become the most sought-after Moonshine reference with secondary market prices of around AU$900 online.

20. Mission to the Moon Moonshine Gold Harvest Moon

Release date: 29 September 2023

For this release, the Mission to the Moon Moonshine Gold MoonSwatch reverted back to its old ways, adding a barley grain pattern as a homage to the Harvest Moon and a secret signature that glows in the dark on the tip of the chronograph seconds hand. This wasn’t a popular release, and as such, prices are low around AU$500 making it a mere $40 more expensive than retail. The days of Moonshine MoonSwatch reselling appear to be over.

Finally, the latest Moonshine Gold release finally updates a significant visual aspect of the watch with a nod to the brand’s heritage by way of a lollipop seconds hand. According to the brand, this “references the OMEGA Speedmaster CK 2998-3 FAP from 1961, the last Speedmaster with the 2998 reference that was fitted with the chronograph lollipop seconds hand.”

Mission to the Moonphase OMEGA x MoonSwatch Models

The latest MoonSwatch release debuted a new model to the line-up called the ‘Mission to the Moonphase’. It brought a higher price point of $500 AUD to the table alongside OMEGA’s classic Snoopy motif that sits within a moonphase function at 2 o’clock. This watch made its debut on the 26th of March 2024.

The significance of the Snoopy motif cannot be overstated, as Man of Many’s Elliot Nash notes in our feature article, “From lending his name to the Apollo 10 lunar module to inspiring the prestigious Silver Snoopy Award, Snoopy holds a special place in the hearts of astronauts and watch enthusiasts alike. OMEGA’s pivotal role in space history, including its essential contribution to the safe return of the Apollo 13 crew, further solidifies the connection between Snoopy, space, and timekeeping.”

Price (RRP): $500 AUD
Release date: 26 March 2024

The debut Mission to the Moonphase watch arrived in an all-over white colourway and we think it looks fantastic. It seems the secondary market agrees because you’ll struggle to find one for less than $1,000 AUD. That being said, Swatch has made it clear that this is a non-limited release and will be made available on most weekends in Australian Swatch boutiques.

Your MoonSwatch FAQs Answered

Where can you buy an OMEGA x Swatch MoonSwatch?

The OMEGA x Swatch MoonSwatch core collection is only available in-store at Swatch Boutiques globally. The weekly release schedule changes depending on boutique locations globally so your best bet is to contact your local Swatch Boutique on Thursday or Friday before release. We’ve managed to find watches for purchase at 10am every Saturday in Sydney, however, this may change with the release of the new Blancpain x Swatch collection.

Is the MoonSwatch easy to get?

In Australia, the OMEGA x Swatch MoonSwatch is easy to acquire. We bought our ‘Mission to Saturn’ watch on a Sunday (a day after release) with no line-up back in September 2022. This is still the case today as the secondary market for these watches has cooled off significantly. Even new Moonshine Gold watches struggle to demand a price premium.
