Seiko Brings Back The ‘Captain Willard’ Prospex Watch

In 1979, Martin Sheen starred as Captain Willard in the epic film Apocalypse Now. Sheen had a couple of co-stars in the film, most notably Marlon Brando as Colonel Kurtz. The second co-star was the original Seiko 6105-8110/9. Seiko is bringing back that iconic timekeeper, releasing the Captain Willard Prospex Watches.

Seiko reveals its Captain Willard Prospex watches

The watches come with either a black dial and bezel, just like the original, or with an olive green dial with bezel. The case is actually smaller and thinner than the original Captain Willard watch, measuring 42.7mm in diameter. The smaller size is possible because Seiko used the 6R35 calibre for this version. The new movement functions at 21,600 vibrations per hour. It comes with 70 hours of power reserve. Seiko also used LumiBrite for the indices and hands. The bezel features a coin edge texture, and the screw-down crown located at four o’clock is protected on either side by large shoulders. A date window is displayed at three o’clock. The case is made of stainless steel and is water-resistant up to 200 metres. The watch comes on a rubber strap.

This isn’t the first time that Seiko has reproduced the Captain Willard watch. This time around, however, the watch won’t be a limited edition, and it will be priced in line with other standard production watches. Priced at $1,100 for the black version and $1,3000 for the olive, the watches will be available sometime in June. Much like the original watch, these new Captain Willard watches are meant to be used. Servicemen purchased the watch as a tool that could withstand being beaten up in the rugged environments that they found themselves in. Priced as they are, and with their track record of reliability, the new Captain Willard watches are an easy entry point for watch lovers looking for a quality watch to wear every day.
