The Wind Up – Watch News #300

This edition of the Wind Up is a special one. It marks the 300th time I’ve proverbially put pen to paper for Man Of Many. What started for me as a budding interest has quickly evolved into a full-blown passion, and I want to thank you, the reader, for letting me delve deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole that is watching. I also would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the team at Man Of Many for putting me on as a young, wide-eyed uni student. Thanks to Scott, Frank and the team, I’ve been able to really dig my heels into the world of watches. Be that as it may, the show must go on, and this week was a big one.

TAG Heuer dropped its latest collaboration with Porsche, just in time for the 2024 Panamericana, Tissot continued to solidify its position as one of the best budget-friendly watchmakers there is, Hermès flexed its artistic flair and Vacheron Constantin celebrated 20 years of the Patrimony with a very special edition. As always fellas, happy reading, I hope you have a great week and thanks again for joining me on this wild, wild ride.

TAG Heuer’s Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon platform is perhaps the coolest of the maison’s complicated products. It features an interesting base that can be dressed up or down depending on where TAG is angling its approach and with the Panamericana on the horizon, it’s little wonder that the Swiss watchmaker went full motorsport. I have to say, it might be the best-looking one yet.

The design is sleek and bold, which is exactly what I love to see from TAG Heuer. You have deep rivets in the dial, an exposed tourbillon, a bezel-free case that aligns with the new Glassbox look, as well as some little details that highlight the piece’s “special” status. The touches of yellow pair well with the stainless steel case, the black sub-dials and the grey tones throughout. A fantastic piece that hits the nail right on its head.

I make it no secret that Vacheron Constantin is one of my all-time favourite watchmakers. From the Traditionnelle to the Overseas, from the Patrimony to their ridiculously complicated high-end pieces, Vacheron can do no wrong (in my very biased opinion). And here the maison is again, expressively unveiling another micro work of art in the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Self-Winding Ora ïto.

Created to mark the 20th anniversary of the esteemed line of classical dress watches, the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Self-Winding Ora ïto was made in collaboration with French designer Ora Ito with his ethos in mind of “Simplexity”. The dial is, as you can see, quite intricate. The pattern is gilded brass and stamped with concentric patterns, much like the ripple effect on the water’s surface.

There is an added date window, with the numeral in red, adding a lovely bit of contrast to the mass of yellow that sits around it. This is a beautiful piece that will appeal to connoisseurs and collectors of the Patrimony line primarily, however we all can admire from afar, too.

Tissot Stylist

  • Model: Stylist
  • Reference: T159.909.16.xx
  • Diameter: 32mm x 7mm
  • Movement: Quartz
  • Water-Resistance: 50m
  • Price: AUD$420

Coming back down to earth for a minute, we have this cool little funky retro number from Tissot. The Stylist is, as you can imagine, a watch that is less about the innards and more about how it looks and feels. Inspired by the original model released in 1965, the 2024 version of the Stylist retains the slim proportions of its older brother, albeit with some more visceral touches of finishing on the case.

The Stylist is available in two distinct models, one with a gradient blue dial and the other with a silver dial. Both models are bang on in terms of value for money, which is largely due to the use of an ETA quartz movement under the hood. This is a rather fun watch that is easy to wear, and what more could you want at this price point?

  • Price:CHF97,000 (Limited to 12 pieces)

Hermès released its latest and greatest in the new Slim d’Hermès Flagship. The aventurine glass serves as the backdrop to a very peculiar, albeit very beautiful, bit of artwork. What looks like the front of a ship is actually the maison’s famous 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré store stylised into the hull of a ship with sails catching the wind above it.

The Slim d’Hermès Flagship is a whimsical expression of artistry and attention to detail from Hermès, with the most subtle of details found throughout. As an example, there is a free-spinning disc that sits below the shooting start at 4 o’clock, which spins sporadically with the motion of your wrist. Not cheap, but also not common. If that’s your thing.
