Tissot T Classic Tradition Quartz Chronograph

Tissot T Classic Tradition Quartz Chronograph

Kicking off our list of best affordable watches is the T-Classic Tradition (yes, its Quartz), a simply beautiful dress watch that you can wear with a variety of straps to alter its genome and purpose. Oversized sub-dials, exposed crown and mushroom pushers look wonderful, and the sword-hands add an element of class and timelessness to the piece. Priced accordingly with respect to its movement, you’d be forgiven for purchasing the piece based on aesthetics alone.

Elliot Brown Bloxworth

Elliot Brown Bloxworth

The Bloxworth combines a distinct diver’s chronograph feel with a contemporary method of casing to create a piece that is both timeless in design and extremely wearable in nature. The gunmetal PVD stainless steel case gives the watch a very versatile feel, while the exposed pushers and crown makes the piece seem larger than its 44 millimetres. A decent piece, but a bit overpriced considering the fact that is uses a Quartz movement. Nevertheless, it’s on our list of best affordable watches so rest assured it’s still pretty damn great!

TW Steel CEO TECH

TW Steel CEO TECH

Very Hublot-esque slash AP vibe, the CEO Tech is a proportionally massive watch that unfortunately won’t sit well on everyone’s wrist. The dark and light grey hues look awesome though, and the addition of the red coloured hints break up the monotonous colour scheme quite well. Not a bad piece, its Quartz, but the price reflects that so all is good.

UNIFORM WARES M42 Chronograph

One of the more beautiful pieces featured in this article and easily one of the best affordable watches is the Uniform Wares M42 Chronograph, a great minimalistic piece that isn’t overly large and won’t break the bank. The applied hour markers and depressed sub-dial registers look wonderful, and while the date window is a bit out of place it doens’t look all that bad. Simply designed, ingeniously executed.

Seiko Men’s SSC017 Prospex Solar Stainless Steel Dive Watch

Seiko Men’s SSC017 Prospex Solar Stainless Steel Dive Watch

Slightly reminiscent of Rolex’s BLNR GMT, the Seiko Prospex Solar is the kind of timepiece I’d seriously consider as a legitimate first watch purchase and a welcomed entry on our list of best affordable watches. Its design is timeless and functional and the addition of the blue hints on the bezel and sub-dial hand looks incredible. The mushroom pushers look great, and my only issue is the shape of the hands. Another winner from Seiko.

Nixon 51-30 Chrono Watch in All Gold Watch

Nixon 51-30 Chrono Watch in All Gold Watch

So not withstanding the fundamentals of watchmaking, the Nixon Chronograph in gold is the kind of watch you’d purchase merely for the aesthetics of the piece. You wouldn’t walk into a store and inquire on its power reserve or timekeeping abilities, rather you’d make your purchasing judgement on how it looks on your wrist. And there isn’t anything wrong with that. This one ranks as one of the best affordable watches on sight!

Burberry Sport Chronograph Black Dial Red Rubber Mens Watch BU77061

Burberry Sport Chronograph Black Dial Red Rubber Mens Watch BU7706

More show than go, the Burberry Sport Chronograph will appeal to a very specific person. The touches of red against the light grey of the case and bezel, and the dark grey of the dial won’t tickle everyone’s fancy, but for those that love this colour combo (and I’m not denying its appeal), it would be a suitable choice. Powered by a Quartz battery, its the no hassle modern-chic-type everyday watch for all of you red lovers out there, and will assuredly appeal to those on the prowl for the best affordable watches.

From a brand that I personally highly admire, the Junghans Manual Max Bill is a basic and simple time-telling mechanism that won’t break the bank and is a great starter piece for all of you budding collectors. Its porportions are on par with something far more expensive, and the dial’s spaciousness really brings home the minimalistic direction of the company. Stowa Marine Auto

A fantastic little piece that looks like it came straight out of the days of traditional watchmaking, the Marine Auto is a lovely piece incorporating distinct vintage design with modern movement architecture. The gloss white dial is superb, and the sub-dial at 6 o’clock showing the passing seconds looks superb. The hands are shaped beautifully, and it uses the respectable ETA/Unites 6498-1 manually wound movement.

Distinct styling reminiscent of the dashboard of an old sports car, the Veloce is a dramatic piece that will surely catch your eye. The addition of the red between 11 and 1 o’clock breaks up the darkness of the piece, and the PVD black case looks incredible. Dark and ominious, the perfect watch for a night on the town and one of the best affordable watches for those who like something different.

Stowa Ikarus

Stowa Ikarus

Very similar to that of an IWC-designed pilot’s watch, the Stowa Ikarus is a beautiful looking piece. The grainy textured dial, cream coloured hands and hour numerals and onion-shaped crown all play to the vintage-pilot’s theme. The addition of the date-window adds an element of functionality to the watch, and the sleep design of the lugs and case emphasises comfort and wearability. A true homage beauty.

SEVENFRIDAY Men’s P3-1 RACER Analog Display Japanese Automatic Black Watch

SEVENFRIDAY Men’s P3-1 RACER Analog Display Japanese Automatic Black Watch

For some bizarre reason, Sevenfriday cop a lot of flack from “seasoned” watch enthusiasts. Their designs are different and definitely outside the box. However, I really like their pieces and am therefore proud to include them on the list of best affordable watches. The designs are very different, ultra masculine and super cool. The movements are Japanese made, which keep the costs down, but overall its a very fun piece and a great collection starter. You can read our interview with Sevenfriday’s CEO here.

Halios 1000m “The Puck”

Featured on Hodinkee, the Halios 1000M is a heavy duty diver’s watch that screams presence and heft. Its modular design is fantastic and sits high on your wrist, and while the dial is lacking much detail, the machine bezel and luminscent inserts look fantastic. Moving the crown to 4 o’clock is a great little addition to an already super cool watch.

Sinn 556i

Sinn 556i

The 556i from Sinn uses sparse dial design, high levels of readability and a comfortable case design to create the perfect everyday piece. A very under-the-rader type watch, the simplicity of the dial masks the complexities of its Swiss automatic ETA-made movement. It seems that as far as the sub-$1000 market goes, Sinn can barely put a foot wrong.

Botta Design Uno Carbon

Botta Design Uno Carbon

Single hand watches seem to be popping up everywhere nowadays. Their design is pretty attention-grabbing, and while their readability may confuse some, it adds an element of entertainment to an otherwise plain-set watch. The crown is very interesting, as is the stitching on the band. I’m surprisingly impressed with this piece. Oh, and it isn’t Quartz!

Archimede Deckwatch

Archimede Deckwatch

Archimede is a well known brand in the world of watches. Their designs are clean and beautiful, with a touch of individuality with respect to their hand designs and dial proportions. Simple design with the inclusion of a hand wound Swiss made movement means that it ticks the boxes of many watch enthusiasts, myself included.

Melbourne Watch Co. Portsea

Melbourne Watch Co. Portsea

Some of the best affordable watches come from places near and dear to our hearts. Take the Portsea for example. Hailing from Melbourne, Australia (duh!), the MWC Portsea is beautiful triple calendar that combines original design with functional capacity. The Portsea has a textured inner dial with blue steel hands and a wonderfully polished case. Overall the watch is superb, and they could’ve taken the easy option in using a Quartz-based movement, but the addition of the automatic mechanism is like the cherry on top. Stunning!

Hypergrand MAVERICK Chrono Silver Black Tarmac

Looking for an all-black, stealth-like watch that you can customise to your heart’s desire and wear everyday regardless of what you’re wearing? Don’t care about the mechanism? You’d probably do well in reading up on the Maverick from Hypergrand. Brash styling thats both distinct and reverred, the Maverick isn’t something you’re going to see everyday, and thats a good thing. Its unique design doesn’t overlook the fundamentals of a good watch, but it is inkeeping with today’s market demands and contemporary styles. If thats what you’re looking for, then you probably won’t find a better watch than the Maverick.

Zelos Abyss 3000m Bronze

Zelos Abyss 3000m Bronze

One of the more interesting pieces I’ve featured, aesthetically speaking, the Abyss 3000m Bronze is an all or nothing, balls to the wall, serious piece of wristwear and one of the best affordable watches on the market. Beyond the obvious (3000m of water crushing resistance!), the highlight of the piece for me is the contrast between the multi-level blue dial and the bronze case. Over time, the case will patina, and for that purpose alone I’d get one. Otherwise, its a very cool piece that will surely catch your friend’s wondering eyes.

Thomas Sabo Rebel at Heart

Thomas Sabo Rebel at Heart

A fashion piece that is about as interesting as a lump of coal. A boring and overused design, couple with a tacky blue dial and band, with a gold-coloured case that will be sure to look horrible after a couple of months worth of exposure to the elements. Priced ridiculously, considering what you can get in the used market. A boring, standard off the shelf design that I wouldn’t recommend, even to the most pretentious and image obsessed individual, which wouldn’t exactly make it one of the best affordable watches. Hmmm…I guess I don’t know why it’s on the list.

Oris Diver’s Watch

Oris Diver’s Watch

A brand that I highly admire, Oris has its fair share of decent pieces in the sub-$1000 market. They’re made of the highest quality, incorporate an automatic movement and look far more expensive than they are. The dial is highly readable, and the uni-directional ceramic bezel looks fantastic against the black dial. A surefire way to impress your cohort of watch lovers.

Shinola The Runwell Chrono Rose Gold

Shinola The Runwell Chrono Rose Gold

A highly polarising design from Shinola, the Runwell Chrono is brash and unique. Admittedly, I’m not its biggest fan. Its design seems all over the place. It seems to lack direction and purpose. Brown strap, rose gold coloured case, white dial, and then these super intrusive orange coloured hints. I don’t really understand the reasoning of the piece, or its target market. Priced high for a Quartz too. A bit of a hit and miss, I think.

Orient M-Force Beast

Orient M-Force Beast

Orient, like Seiko, are a very underrated Asia-based brand that tend to get overlooked based on the assumption that their pieces are sub-par and aren’t of the same calibre as a Swiss-made timepiece. This isn’t true, as their pieces are made with same gusto and passion as their Swiss counterparts. High class manufacturing and design create a unique aesthetic, while the automatic movement with hacking seconds provide the go for the watch. A serious timepiece with heart and soul and one of the best affordable watches. Not to be overlooked.

Apple Watch

Apple Watch

I’m still very much on the fence regarding the Apple Watch. It isn’t something I plan on buying, even though I love the iPhone. Its very polarising, technically impressive but still quite overpriced. In a day and age where anything and everything can be accessed via your smartphone, I think that the Apple Watch is just an extension of that ability, as opposed to its own product. But I could be wrong, maybe.

Sekford-Type-1A-Stainless-Steel-And-Leather-Watch

Sekford Type 1A Stainless Steel And Leather Watch

A step up into the upper echelons of horological minimalism is the Sekford Type 1A. The missing seconds hand does more for the simplicity of the piece than I think the designers thought it would, as it brings home the true essence of minimalism in watches. The small numerals, and equally small hours/minutes hand does wonders for the simplicty of the piece, but I’m afraid the price tag for a Quartz watch is a bit of a deterrent.

Citizen Promaster Sky Eco-Drive Solar Watch

Citizen Promaster Sky Eco-Drive Solar Watch

The name Citizen inherently rarely attracts attention. Mainly due to the fact that the majority of their pieces are boring and redundant. The Promaster on the other hand carries with it elements of interest and intrigue. It has a busy dial that incorporates several different functions, with the outer ring showing the world time. At 44mm, it is right on the cusp of wearability and comfort, and if you’re anything like me then you’d be right in thinking the only thing it needs is a new strap. Seiko ProspEx Diver Scuba Men’s Watch

Seiko ProspEx Diver Scuba Men’s Watch

Seiko is the kind of brand that you either buy from because you have to, or you buy from because you know what they represent. That is, good quality watches for a decent price. The ProspEx Diver is another one of those “no-frills” quality daily beaters that you can wear in the office or at the beach. Durable enough to last several lifetimes, it isn’t going to be the smallest watch in your arsenal, but it will definitely be your “go-to” piece.

Timex Intelligent Quartz Depth Gauge Dive Watch

Timex Intelligent Quartz Depth Gauge Dive Watch

Historically Timex haven’t had the greatest success. Their watches haven’t been met with the same open arms as Seiko, but with Timex you know exactly what you’re going to get before you even get the watch. Quartz be damned, some times you just have to grin and bear the fact that alot of watches under the $1K mark are priced that way because of that little battery. The Depth Gauge is the kind of watch you get before you buy your first proper watch. Its sturdy, its versatile and it sure as hell looks good. Massive crown and pushers make the wearability factor a bit hazy for me, but otherwise a solid all rounder.

Nixon 51-30 Tide

Nixon 51-30 Tide

Not a brand typically spoken of by “watch guys”, Nixon produced watches for the specific consumer. Think blonde hair, surfboard tucked under arm, bronze tan type consumer. Just kidding, but seriously, their best affordable watches don’t beat around the bush. They do what they claim to do and the brand represents itself as a lifestyle brand, not a horological powerhouse. Drop the price a bit and then I’d see it their way, but otherwise a decent piece for the consumer who knows what they want.

Hexa K500 Diver

Hexa K500 Diver

Micro-brands are the way of the future. You heard it here first! Hexa’s dive watch, produced in collaboration with Watchuseek.com, is a play between classic diver’s watch styling and modern flair. What you get is a piece not that dissimilar to the famed Submariner (aesthetically speaking, of course), while not formally copying its iconic design. The sunburst dial is stunning, and the addition of the date window is a nice little touch of practicality. Powered by the Miyota 9015, it isn’t by any means haute horlogerie, but it is a workhorse and looks damn good at the same time.

Anstead Oceanis

Anstead Oceanis

The next micro-brand to be featured is Anstead with their Oceanics Divers piece. The piece has an enormously thick rotating bezel, but is offset quite well with the regular sized crown and short guards. The lugs do well to pull out the watch and stop it looking stumpy, while the dial’s simplicity is welcoming and legible. The Oceanis uses the extremely common but forever dependable Miyota 9015 as its chosen mechanism. It looks great under a shirt cuff or on a naked wrist — a decent piece for a good price.

Marathon Jumbo Search and Rescue (JSAR)

Marathon Jumbo Search and Rescue (JSAR)

Proportionally a bit odd, the Marathon Jumbo Search and Rescue has a super thin bezel relative to its heft. The hour numerals are thin and elongated, while the hands are very thick, which looks a bit odd. The addition of the 24-hour inner chapter ring and the weirdly placed date window makes the dial a bit of a hit and miss for me. The stainless steel case is neatly polished though, and its safe to say the crown is my favourite feature.

Seiko SKX781 Orange Monster Dive Watch

Seiko SKX781 Orange Monster Dive Watch

The “Monster” divers from Seiko are so damn cool. They’re a play between design functionality and dial aesthetics. What I see may be different to what you see, and thats the point. What I see is an orange mouth with luminscent teeth closing in as the lips (bezel) close down. Very strange, but very fun. Oh, and I absolutely love the crown placement at 4 o’clock.

Halios Laguna

Halios Laguna

The retro-design of the Laguna is just one of the many features that set this piece apart from the divers from the other micro-brands. Set on a pillow-shaped case, the dial is clean and crisp, while the sword-shape hands are well proportioned and not too thick. The case itself is a comfortable 43mm, and at only 14.5mm thick, it will wear extremely well regardless of your outfit. Add to that the use of the ETA 2824-2 calibre, and you have yourself a recipe for success.

Longines HydroConquest Blue Dial Stainless Steel Watch

Longines HydroConquest Blue Dial Stainless Steel Watch

Longines were once regarded as one of the finest watchmaking manufacturers during the early 1900s, but have since lost their influence and desirability. I, however, love them. The HydroConquest is just another reason why they should be seriously considered when purchasing a watch. The deep blue on the dial and bezel look awesome, and the steel bracelet is well polished and comfortable. My only issue is the oversized numbers with the undersized date window, which looks a bit odd when you look at the watch as a whole. Otherwise, not a bad piece, even for a Quartz!

Autran & Viala Aviator B Automatic Pilot

Autran & Viala Aviator B Automatic Pilot

A very clean and simple piece from Autran and Viala, the Aviator B is reminiscent of a classic pilot’s watch. Highly legible dial, exposed crown and a beautifully stitched leather strap are all prerequisites for a great pilot’s watch. Powered by the ETA 2824-2, the Aviator B is bound to intrigue the classical pilot watch lover’s fancy. A beautifully designed piece that is both affordable and practical.

Archimede Pilot 42 Automatic

Archimede Pilot 42 Automatic

Take those outrageous price tags off the table and the best affordable watches find themselves with room to experiment, and speaking personally I love it when brands play with different materials. The combination of bronze and black makes for a classic pilot’s watch, and with time that bronze will age and develop a beautiful patina. The dial is neatly laid out, with sword-shaped hands and a long seconds hand really adding those finishing touches. The crown is exposed and lovely, and the case sits well at 42mm. Subtly beautiful yet still capable of making a statement.

Hamilton Men’s H64715885 Khaki Pilot Grey Dial Watch

Hamilton Men’s H64715885 Khaki Pilot Grey Dial Watch

Hamilton’s take on the classic pilot’s watch combines the typical design features found in a vintage pilot’s piece with contemporary aesthetic design. The crown guards and lugs seem to blend into each other, while the dial looks large due to the missing bezel. The dial itself is finished in a grainy black-grey colour scheme, while the hour numerals are contrasted in an off-white grey. A beautiful pilot’s watch for the modern man.

Momo Design Pilot Pro Crono

Momo Design Pilot Pro Crono

Looking more like a G-Shock and less like a Pilot, the Momo Design Pilot Pro is a piece that isn’t going to appeal to everyone. The pilot watch purists probably won’t accept this as a true pilot’s piece, and nor should they. The design is less pilot and more random, with a lack of direction from the piece the main theme here. If you’re going to call it a pilot’s watch, then make it look like a pilot’s watch. Otherwise, call it like it is: a messy, directionless Quartz watch. Massive “meh” from me…aww shucks, I’ll put it on the list of best affordable watches anyway.

Ernest Borel Rocky Collection II

Ernest Borel Rocky Collection II

Reminiscent of a Jacques Droz slash Nomos collaboration, this piece from Ernest Borel is beautifully design and extremely well put together. The watch is interesting without being too ostentatious. Its design is very different and very unique, a trait that rarely works. But this one is a bit different. A day indicator with an hour/minutes indicator overlapping it, and a small-seconds register with an oversized date window. Whats not to love? Lose the Quartz, reduce the date window size and you have a piece that will most definitely win over the hearts of those looking for the best affordable watches.

Simple, elegant and fastidiously designed, the Uniform Wares’ simple C35 is a piece running on all cylinders. The dial has a grainy textured finish to it, the hands are beautifully finished and the case with the undersized crown looks fantastic. Filson Mackinaw Field Watch

Filson Mackinaw Field Watch

The supremely versatile watch that is the byproduct of years of wanting a practical watch that can be worn anywhere and still look prime. A combination of creams and greys adorn the face of the watch, while the brown strap adds to the overall ruggedness of the watch. The unique crown brings the piece together, and while it is powered by a Quartz movement (on that note, not the worst Quartz mechanism I’ve seen), it is still a fairly decent piece and one of the best affordable watches.

Victorinox Swiss Army Airboss Black Dial Power Gauge Mens Watch 241575

Victorinox Swiss Army Airboss Black Dial Power Gauge Mens Watch 241575

As of late I’ve been paying a bit more attention to Victorinox as a watch manufacturer, and I’ve been enjoying it. The Airboss is just another reason as to why they deserve my attention, and why they should get yours. An ordinary piece at first sight, I must agree, but if you look a bit closer and a tad more carefully you’ll soon realise that it is the kind of watch you’d want to consider purchasing. It has a well designed rehault, a step-down register with power gauge and an unobtrusive date window at 3 o’clock. Its proportions are excellent, as is its movement. One of the best affordable watches from one of my favourite affordable brands.

Steve Alan Field Watch

A more modern take on the traditional field watch, the Steve Alan Field watch uses modern aesthetic design cues to create a lovely little watch relevent to today’s market demands. Its the kind of watch you strap on when you wake up, without having to really think about what you’re going to match it with or where you’re going to wear it to. Its that kind of versatility that makes me a big fan of this piece specifically, and my admiration for it only rises when I realised it had an automatic movement. Well done.

Christopher Ward C5 Malvern Auto Mk II

Christopher Ward C5 Malvern Auto Mk II

First off, the dial. And out of all the best affordable watches in this article, I think that this is the most brilliant dial there is. A stunning contrast of dark and light purples depending on the light looks dazzling within the stainless steel case. The dial is just so beautiful and even with the intrusive date window (which actually doesn’t look all that bad), it just flows so well. Cap it off with the automatic movement (my second point), and you have a very beautiful watch that isn’t just all show.

Frederique Constant Index Automatic

Maybe the perfect dress watch and one of the best affordable watches, the FC Index is plain, simple and beautifully put together. It shows the maturity of an otherwise young brand in creating a very direct watch that serves a singular purpose: to tell the time beautifully. The addition of the date window adds to its functionality, and while it isn’t an upper echelon Swiss made piece, it still is highly desirable and should be seriously considered for purchase for anyone looking for a solid dress watch.

Maurice Lacroix Men’s EL1088-SS001-810 Eliros Analog Display Analog Quartz Black Watch

Maurice Lacroix Men’s EL1088-SS001-810 Eliros Analog Display Analog Quartz Black Watch

Like Frederique Constant, Maurice Lacroix isn’t the greatest of Swiss watch manufacturers, but they are doing fairly well in their market. The Eliros combines functionality with beauty to create a wonderful spectacle of watchmaking. The slate grey sunburst dial and ultra-thin bezel play so well together, and the mushroom pushers and small crown liven up the case. The only issue is that it uses a Quartz movement, but for under $1K it’s still one of the best affordable watches, using a mechanical chronograph easily pushes the price up several hundred dollars. Either way, brilliant.

From the box-patterned blue dial to the highly legible sub-dial placement and date-window, this piece is for the practical watch wearer. The case is superb and looks like it will wear well for its size. Maybe one of the finer dress watches here, this certainly appeals to the inner gentleman in me (I never thought I had one). Bulova Accutron ‘Gemini’ Automatic Movement

Some of the best affordable watches tout a simple but elegant design. Similar to that of a timeless Calatrava piece, the Bulova Gemini incorporates old-school design with the onion-crown and scarab-lugs. The dial is verging on a gilt-type design, and while the over-sized hour numerals look a bit odd, the bronze hands work very well with the black dial. A really beautiful piece. The T-Lord incorporates a cushion-case with sleep case design to create a very special piece. The sleek design of the lugs and crown make the watch look very streamlined, while the step-down from the outer to inner dial plays well for the proportions of the watch. The chronograph function (automatic, yes!) isn’t anything spectacular but it gets the job done. Maybe the most dressy of the chronographs here on our list of best affordable watches, but also one of the more beautiful.

Xetum Stinson

Xetum Stinson

The Xetum Stinson is a very avant-garde slash modern interpretation of a typical dress watch. The oversized crown set against the sleek case and slim-line strap looks a bit odd and you’d be forgiven in thinking that you may want to jump to the next watch. The dial is deep and black, the bezel is nice and thin, but the hands don’t do much for the overall proportions of the watch. Maybe it’s something a well off preppy student might buy, but it doesn’t do much for me (not that such a thing has prevented its inclusion on this list of best affordable watches). Pass.

Hamilton Intra-Matic 38

Hamilton Intra-Matic 38

The Intra-Matic reminds me of the old Univeral Geneve time-only pieces. Its dimensions are befitting that of an older generation timepiece. Its nice and clean, and the elongated hands and hour markers look quite beautiful against the crisp white dial. The undersized crown and lugs make the watch look slimmer than its 38mm width. The Intra-Matic has a Swiss Automatic movement, so thats a plus. Beyond that, its a pretty decent piece that you can dress up or down so I guess we can include it on our list of best affordable watches.

Davosa Classic Mecanique

Maybe the most beautiful sub-$1000 dress watch in this review, the Davosa Classic Mecanique is absolutely stunning. Stainless steel hands and hour markers against the crisp white dial and outer-dial’s circular engravings makes the watch look like it costs many more thousands of dollars than what it does. The Visodate is one of Tissot’s most recognisable pieces and one of the best affordable watches, and for good reason. From the integrated crown to the day-date function, the watch is as timeless as it is versatile. The sharpness of the dial is countered by the smoothness of the case, and it can be dressed up with its factory leather band or dressed down with a distressed brown leather band or NATO strap. Thomas Sabo Rebel At Heart Watch

Thomas Sabo Rebel At Heart Chronograph

Known for bracelets rather than watches, Thomas Sabo’s Rebel At Heart timepiece isn’t all that bad. From an aesthetic stand point, its very nice. Large enough to make a statement, but with enough detailing intricacies to not look like a plastic piece of crap. At 44mm, it will sit large on the wrist, but its black on black visage will keep the piece somewhat low-key. Pricing is high, especially for a Quartz, but either way something to consider if fashion-brand watches are your thing.

Rossling & Co Silve & White

Rossling & Co Silve & White

Design chic and flair is what I look for the most from micro-brands. Individuality is what I look for in the best affordable watches from those brands. The Rossling & Co Rogart gives me both in spades. Its design is reminiscent of something from Nomos (minus the price tag), and thats not a bad thing. The watch offsets the white dial with the blue hands very well, and the small date window next to the semi-sized crown looks fantastic. Quite a good looking watch, the only thing I’m not really enjoying is the onion-crown. Doesn’t suit the design of the watch and shouldn’t really be there. Otherwise, it’ll do. For a Quartz.

Timex Flyback Chronograph

I actually really enjoy Timex’s Flyback Chronograph function. Its fun to play with and operates quite well, especially for a Quartz. Citizen Primo Chronograph

The first thing that comes to mind when I look at this watch is heavy-duty. It looks like the kind of watch you can wear in a construction site and not be worried about breaking it. The brand knows a thing or two about crafting the best affordable watches and this one is naturally no exception. The dial is nice and busy but still well laid out and very readable. At 51mm this is probably the largest watch I’ve featured throughout this article, and as such for a lot of people this is probably going to be too big. But for you massive wristed humans, you may want to take note. The Nixon Chronograph is big and hefty, but in my opinion a tad overpriced and definitely indicative of the brand’s fashion ethos, rather than horological inclined design (which is typically a lot more modest in size). I’ve had my eye on this piece for a while now. Just haven’t been able to bring myself to pulling the trigger on it! It’s a beautiful piece and one of the best affordable watches, so obviously inspired by the IWC Pilot’s design. A homage, not a rip off, and it’s important to remember the difference. It isn’t the cheapest piece on this list, but it is one of the more refined. A real triumph in the market of homage pieces.

March Lab AM1 40mm Automatic Gun

March Lab AM1 40mm Automatic Gun

Something very different from what’s been featured on our list of best affordable watches, the March Lab AM1 has a beautiful sub-burst dial, gold hands and hour indicies and an over-sized crown at the unconventional but still very cool 4 o’clock location. The mirror-polished case against the darkened dial looks wonderful, and the small date window doesn’t obscure from an otherwise stunning aesthetic. Viscerally superb and mechanically sound, the AM1 is something out of the ordinary but still super awesome.

Hamilton Men’s H77616533 Chronograph Watch

Hamilton Men’s H77616533 Chronograph Watch

In the market bracket of sub-$1000 watches you’re unfortunately going to be exposed to a lot of crap, i.e. products that don’t really belong on a list of best affordable watches. Heck, even on our list of best affordable watches you’ll find some junk. However, this one is something so much the opposite I’m considering getting it for myself as I write this. The Hamilton Chronograph is something that the budget-conscious watch lover should consider for their next purchase. The asymmetical alignment of the crowns and the dial layout is almost perfect, and the addition of an automatic movement is like the cherry on top of a pleasant little cupcake. Do away with the stock strap, throw a NATO on it and you’ve got your hands on one of the best affordable watches (assuming a price just south of $1000 is still affordable to you).

AVI-8 Hawker Harrier II

AVI-8 Hawker Harrier II

AVI-8 are a brand thats been around for a few years now, and have differentiated themselves by designing watches that are simple and pay homage to pilot’s timepieces of a bygone era. Their best affordable watches are easy to read, extremely versatile and wonderfully designed. The Hawker Harrier II incorporates a deep black dial with a lovely rose-gold case and crown offset by a vintage-inspired strap that looks sublime. The dial is clear and defined, and the addition of a red seconds hand adds a certain nostalgic charm to the piece’s aesthetics. The perfect modern day vintage inspired pilot’s watch.

Casio Frogman G-Shock GWF-1000

Casio Frogman G-Shock GWF-1000

Ah, the trusty and ever reliable G-Shock. If you follow me on Instagram you’d know of my love for my little G-Shock. For the practical watch lover, this is your perfect all-in-one timepiece that you can wear in any environment without worrying about it. An easy addition to the list of best affordable watches.

Moto 360

Moto 360

When it comes to hunting for the best affordable watches I’m all about variety, and for the modern day watch lover that can’t get their hand off of their phone this piece may interest you as well. The Moto 360 combines typical watch design with modern technological usability and interface functionality. Check the time, sure. Read updates and notifications from your phone, yep. See how your body is doing, uh-huh. Its the kind of watch that does it all, but isn’t going to scream “preppy-sophistication” like the Apple Watch or the Samsung Gear. Its going to fly under the radar, and maybe thats why I can appreciate it so much.

Casio – G-Shock – GravityMaster Series – GPS Hybrid Wave Ceptor – BlackBlue – GPW1000-1A

Casio – G-Shock – GravityMaster Series – GPS Hybrid Wave Ceptor – Black/Blue – GPW1000-1A

A bit different from the previous G-Shock that I featured, the Gravity Master Hybrid incorporates the usual technical prowess we’ve come to expect from Casio’s line of heavy duty watches, but this time with an analog display. Its a tank of a watch, no doubt, but its still very wearable and will surely survive any impeding apocolyptic event, and isn’t that the point of a G-Shock’s existence?

Braun Men’s BN0106SLBTG Prestige Digital Digital Display Swiss Quartz Silver Watch

Braun Men’s BN0106SLBTG Prestige Digital Digital Display Swiss Quartz Silver Watch

Braun have been released some very interesting pieces over the past few years. This piece is something very chic and very modern while utilising complications that are typical of a high grade Swiss made piece. There’s the obvious time display, but there’s also a chronograph and a perpetual calendar good for a century. A bit expensive (hence perhaps an ironic addition to our list of best affordable watches) and no doubt a very polarising aesthetic, but still pretty cool.

Casio MTGS1000BD-1

Casio MTGS1000BD-1

And capping our list of best affordable watches is this stunner from Casio. G-Shocks have this certain charm to them that appeals to watch lovers and collectors of all calibres. From the Patek collector to the vintage lover, the G-Shock commands a respect that is lost amongst a lot of similar priced pieces. Its because they are true to their roots and don’t front themselves as being something that they’re not. And for this, I love G-Shock. This specific piece has a beautiful dial texture that only adds to the durability effect of the piece. High grade watchmaking that will certainly stand the test of time.
