21 Best Alcoholic Ciders For Summer

If you’re sick of hitting the suds, there’s nothing quite like a Summer cider. The harsh Australian heat and the crispness of apple make for the perfect bedfellows, so it’s little wonder the land Down Under has taken to the bubbly favourite. In fact, over the last few years, the cider market has exploded, bringing new players to the game and new flavours to the mix. Where once the best cider Australia could produce was your stock-standard dry apple, there’s now elderflower, strawberry, lime, pear and any number of other botanicals to choose from. So, the begs to be asked, with so many Cider options and flavours available, how do you make sure your summer is a killer one?

What is Cider?

Put simply, cider is an alcoholic beverage that is made from the fermented juice of apples. A favourite in areas such as the United Kingdom, where it has the world’s highest per capita consumption, the drink has transcended categories, spilling into beer drinking territory and cocktail connoisseur camps.

While there are non-alcoholic versions, most ciders are alcohol-controlled through the addition of sugar or extra fruit before a second fermentation. This, in turn, increases the ethanol content of the resulting beverage, allowing you to pump up the ABV depending on the recipe. According to UK law, cider must contain at least 35% apple juice (fresh or from concentrate), however, the Campaign for Real Ale suggests that “real cider” must be at least 90% fresh apple juice. In other countries, the requirements aren’t quite so strict.

Here in Australia, cider has played a big role in the drinking landscape since early settlement. While bespoke brewers and local icons like Three Oaks Cider and Pipsqueak have made major waves in the scene, the cider market is still strongly dominated by Mercury and Strongbow.

Cider vs Perry

Despite what you may think, not all fruit-based alcoholic beverages are ciders. There are a number of variations to the iconic drink that are frequently, albeit incorrectly, labelled as such. The most common of which is ‘Perry’, which is made from fermented pear juice. While you might see ‘pear cider’ advertised in bottle shops, what you’re actually drinking is perry, but for the purposes of this list, we’ve kept them one and the same.

Best Ciders in Australia

Now you know your Perrys from your ciders, it’s time to dive into the wide world of fermented fruit juice. Here is a list of the best ciders Australia has to offer. Kick-off your summer right with a couple of cold ones.
