If you thought using a lighter to open a beer was cool, take a look at this one-of-a-kind AU$30,000 bottle opener from James Squire. The brainchild of the world-renowned founder of design firm Discommon, Neil Ferrier, the item is considered the most expensive in Australia. The bottle opener has been assembled to celebrate the James Squire Pioneers’ Collection – a limited edition range of small-batch, barrel-aged beers, reimagining the hopped English IPA.

This one-off design effort took over 150 hours to meticulously craft by hand and features sterling silver, burl walnut, grade 5 titanium and rare Damascus, which was used to make ancient swords. Artists who specialise in each of the materials used was brought together, with the piece blending rich history with the modern world. Ferrier aimed to embody the ‘pioneering spirit of James Squire’ by combining classic artforms, such as hand finishing wood and casting silver with 3D printing and technical machining.
Ferrier said: “From the initial ideation to the finishing touches of the bottle opener, uniting exceptional design and meticulous execution was always front of mind, which aligned Discommon well with the James Squire Pioneers’ Collection. The collision of rich history and modern and progressive practices from James Squire led to the creation of a truly unique bottle opener, and incorporating these two worlds was both challenging and exciting in the design process. ”

To provide support for our farmers in need, all profits from the sale will be donated to Rural Aid. Individuals can register interest to participate in the silent auction to buy the bottle opener by heading to the James Squire website.
