Petition to Save Aussies from Skin Cancer Gains Momentum

A country with a skin cancer rate 12 times higher than the global average ought to have a comprehensive national early detection program in place. Sadly, this isn’t the reality. Every six hours, one Australian loses their life to this relentless disease, despite millions spent on preventive campaigns. Shockingly, emergency departments have seen a 30% surge in sunburn cases. There’s hope in a petition by Skin Check Champions, a nonprofit seeking support for a national skin check initiative. Time is running out, with the petition closing on December 13th. This organization, spurred by the loss of a friend to melanoma, has provided 10,000+ free skin checks across Australia, detecting thousands of cancers.

Their innovative ‘Project Check Mate,’ incorporating AI in screenings, has shown promise, aiming to revolutionise early detection. The charity’s goal is to convince the government to invest in this efficient model, particularly in remote areas lacking healthcare access. Scott Maggs, the Founder & CEO, emphasises the urgency, noting that 2 in 3 Aussies face potential skin cancer risks. They encourage affected individuals to share their stories on social media using #SkinCheckChampions alongside the petition link. Celebrities like Deborah Hutton have joined the cause, stressing the importance of government support for this critical initiative.

Signing the petition is free, takes 20 seconds and it could literally save lives.

ANZUP’s Rude Food Cookbook Invites Innuendos Into the Kitchen to Raise Funds for Cancer

The Australian and New Zealand Urogenital and Prostate Cancer Trials Group – ANZUP – has today launched the presale of its Rude Food Cookbook, inviting those innuendos and tongue-in-cheek recipes into the kitchen to encourage conversation about ‘below the belt’ cancers AND to raise vital funds for clinical trials research.

With cheeky dishes such as Cock Em Bouche and Spotted Dick, the book contains a collection of recipes with contributors including celebrity chefs Manu Fieldel and Ainsley Harriot, alongside comedians Michael Shafar and Nick Capper and even New Zealand’s Viva La Dirt League. Despite the serious nature of what the book is raising funds for, there’s plenty to chuckle about and some fun to have.

The presale of the book starts today with copies of the book being sent by Valentine’s Day 2024. All proceeds raised will go directly to ANZUP’s clinical trials and research into testicular, penile, prostate, kidney and bladder cancers.
