After being a tad late to the EV party, Maserati is making up for lost time as it rapidly electrifies its entire model range step by step. After the electric GranTurismo, the Grecale gets the Folgore EV badge with clear aspirations to take on the likes of the upcoming new Porsche Macan EV. Unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show alongside the local debut of the GranTurismo, the Grecale Folgore is a crucial addition to the Maserati range as it tries to enter the lucrative electric SUV space with China spearheading total luxury EV sales.
The Grecale Folgore seems to be dressed well for the job with exclusive ‘Rame Folgore’ colour and a new grille with gloss black inserts. Meanwhile, the splitters, door handles, and side skirts are also finished in gloss black. We love the copper accents on the badges and brake callipers and the illuminated side vents. Wheel options are limited to either 20″ or 21″ aero wheels (depending on market).
On the inside, we’ll make quick mention of the Folgore embossed pattern and the new sustainable ‘Econyl’ material used throughout. A mix of regenerated nylon made by recovering nylon waste plus fishing nets from the oceans and aquaculture, fabric scraps from mills and carpets destined for landfill.
In terms of technology, you’ll find gesture controls for the climate function, cooled/heated powered seats, a 12.3-inch display and standard air suspension.
The 2480kg Grecale Folgore makes more torque than the bonkers turb0-V8 Trofeo version at 820Nm and 410kW, so expect a swift 0-100km/h time around the high 3-second mark and an electronically-limited top speed of 220km/h. Dual electric motors are powered by a large 105kWh battery with a targetted range of 500km WLTP.
To make the most of charging, the brand has included automatic battery preconditioning, dynamic range mapping and EV routing. Speaking of, charging is very fast gaining 20-80% in 29 mins or 100km WLTP in around 9 mins with 400V architecture. In total, the Grecale Folgore gets four different driving modes: Max, Range, GT, Sport and Offroad.
An Australian launch is expected to happen sometime next year as the petrol and hybrid versions will land here first.
