The link between two of the best collaborators in sneakers, ASICS SportStyle and the Kiko Kostadinov Studio, has been extended to a fresh pair of UB10-S GEL-KAYANO 20 colourways (AUD$300).
Now available online at asics.com/au/, the duo has cooked up a lifestyle meets running silhouette that leans on an early to mid-2010s aesthetic with a seamless construction, fewer overlays, and a fiery range of colourways, including Moss/Gunmetal, Vintage Indigo/Sea Glass, and the Deep Plum/Beet Juice that we have our hands on here.
Of course, plenty of modern technology has been introduced into the fold, including FLUIDFIT, which helps create a sock-like fit while eliminating the need for traditional overlays, and a cage-like TPU material has been used for form and function in a crisscross pattern on the upper. Curated by the Kiko Kostadinov Studio and the ASICS SportStyle development team, the overall design finds inspiration from the ideas of “découpage” (paper cut-outs) and “natural simulacrum.” However, all you really need to know is that they’re heaters. Let’s take a closer look!
The GEL-KAYANO 20 on which this silhouette is based might only be 11 years old, but we love the way ASICS has integrated all-day comfort features and kept the early to mid-2010s running shoe aesthetic.
There’s the aforementioned FLUIDFIT cage application for a supportive fit, but the cushion is delivered with dual GEL technology inserts and a TRUSSTIC support system for stability. Interestingly, ASICS has made sure that 30% of the upper material is made with recyclable synthetic fibre for sustainability purposes.
The design is layered, but the brand notes that the materials on the upper “evoke the textures of fossils and petrology,” while the silky moiré surfaces provide a look that mirrors everyday objects. Of course, you’ll have to wear these in full sun to truly appreciate that effect, but it does create a unique aesthetic that bridges design and nature.
Our pick of the bunch is the “Deep Plum/Beet Juice” UB10-S GEL-Kayano 20 that we have in hand for this article. The safety orange logo and highlights pop against the plum mesh and FLUIDFIT liner. Meanwhile, the Vintage Indigo/Sea Glass and Moss/Gunmetal both play with metallics, teals and dark shades and are more wearable, if not a little bland in comparison to the orange and plum outfit.
