Chinese technology brand XGIMI is looking to change how we consume content in our homes with its brand new innovation, dubbed the ‘Magic Lamp’. A somewhat chic-looking disc-shaped ceiling lamp that at first glance, the new home accessory actually houses an HD projector and multi-audio speaker system neatly wrapped inside the lamp’s sturdy plastic shell. The home entertainment space has grown exponentially over the last decade and there’s plenty of focus amongst companies on achieving the dream of a “wireless future” that allows users to consume content from wherever they want. XGIMI’s Magic Lamp is something else altogether.
This new ceiling lamp will truly revolutionize the smart home projector industry with its innovative design. One of the major problems with projectors is they need an appropriate flat surface to rest on, which this Magic Lamp completely eliminates. Furthermore, since it’s fixed to the ceiling, the projector’s light won’t be shining into the eyes of anyone who walks by. There are also no visible wires here, which allows for an uncluttered setup.
Measuring roughly 18.8 x 18.8 x 6.1-in, this ceiling lamp can be easily installed and comprises 176 LUMILEDS with no flicker. The whole thing can be controlled via XGIMI mobile companion application. Besides brightening up your home, the Magic Lamp has the power to turn any room into a mini home theatre, thanks to a fairly powerful HD projector and a Harman Kardon sound system. To provide a bigger and better viewing experience, this new ceiling lamp projector system hybrid can be adjusted by up to 32 degrees for larger projecting angles onto a wall.
This will let you move the picture up or down within a one-meter range. In terms of picture quality or brightness, there’s nothing much here. The projector has got a maximum 1080p resolution and brightness of 900 ANSI lumens, which is rather middling and sort of a deal-breaker, especially at a time when 4K resolution has become quite standard. Audio and sound are taken care of by the in-built Harman Kardon 2.1 channel 28 W speaker system for a surround sound experience, with support for Dolby Audio and DTS Virtual:X technologies.
This is the Magic Lamp’s third generation and is slated to launch in China sometime this year with a price tag of AUD$1,695 or UDS$1,170. The company is yet to reveal an international release date. Even though the features offered here aren’t flagship level, this new ceiling light-cum-projector is an ingenious piece of invention that can be fitted almost anywhere in the house, allowing people a full suite of entertainment irrespective of which room they are in.
