Ulysse Nardin’s Freak ONE Gets Blue Enamel and Guilloché for 25th Anniversary

Over the past 25 years, the Ulysse Nardin Freak has done away with some of the most familiar parts of a mechanical watch. No conventional dial. No standard hands. It doesn’t even have a crown to adjust. So, naturally, Ulysse Nardin is celebrating the collection’s 25th anniversary by lavishing traditional decorative techniques on the component that effectively replaces the dial.

The new Freak [ONE Blue Enamel] and Freak [ONE Guilloché] build on the Freak [ONE] introduced in 2023, making the rotating hour disc the real freak show. Each is limited to 99 pieces, with the Blue Enamel priced at AUD$138,900 and the Guilloché at AUD$123,700.

If you’ve never encountered a Freak before, here’s the watch-geek explanation. Its large hour disc rotates once every 12 hours, while the movement’s flying carousel makes a complete rotation every 60 minutes to indicate the minutes. And with no crown in sight, you instead unlock the mechanism at six o’clock and rotate the bezel to set the time. It’s all very impressive, so let’s find out how these Freaks come together.

Two Very Different Takes on the Same Freak

The more colourful of the pair is the Freak [ONE Blue Enamel]. Its hour disc is made from white gold, engraved with a subtle sunray pattern and covered in Grand Feu blue enamel by Ulysse Nardin’s Donzé Cadrans atelier. The tricky part is that this isn’t simply a decorative dial sitting above the movement. The hour disc is part of the movement itself, so it still needs to rotate accurately once the watch is assembled.

That’s also why Ulysse Nardin uses white gold here, chosen for its thermal stability during the enamelling process. The enamel is built up through repeated firings at around 800°C before the disc is hand-polished, creating the rich blue finish around the exposed carousel.

As for the Freak [ONE Guilloché], it’s a little on the quiet side, at least in comparison. Its diamond-pattern motif is first created by hand, before being transferred onto the production discs using the traditional flinqué stamping process. A sand-coloured finish gives the disc a warmer tone against the 44mm light-grey titanium case and matching grey rubber strap.

Both watches use Ulysse Nardin’s automatic UN-240 calibre, with a silicon balance wheel and hairspring, a diamond-coated silicon DIAMonSIL escapement designed to reduce friction and improve shock resistance, and a 90-hour power reserve.
