There’s a great quote from the hit 1984 Tom Cruise movie Risky Business, that goes like this: “Sometimes you gotta say ‘What the Fuck,’ make your move. Joel, every now and then, saying “What the Fuck”, brings freedom. Freedom brings opportunity, opportunity brings freedom.” Truer words may never have been spoken, especially if you ask Gary John Bishop, the author of Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and Into Your Life and self-empowering book about the subtle art of not giving a fuck about as many things in life as most people do.
As Bishop points out, most of these concerns that consume many of us on a regular basis—money, respect, relationships—are things we often times can’t totally control and spend way to much time worrying about. So his solution? Say fuck it and let most of the concerns you have over them go. Use the energy for something better, something you can control or something new. By just saying “fuck it”, maybe you’ll find an incredible weight has been lifted off your shoulders, feel a freedom you never knew you had and maybe discover a great new part of yourself you never knew existed.
Just don’t turn your parent’s house into a brothel while they are away on vacation.
