It’s always been hard to track what Nintendo is going to do, but not many people saw the ‘Alarmo’ alarm clock coming. I’m not entirely sure I’d want to have the sound of Mario collecting coins or Link collecting rupees going off while I’m half asleep, but maybe that’s the point.

The clock, which Nintendo will be selling exclusively through its My Nintendo online store or its physical New York store until early 2025, uses motion sensors to read if you’re actually getting up to your alarm, and rewards you with a little jingle if you do.

If you don’t though, expect the clock to retaliate and send Bowser after you, as well as less soothing morning music.

It’s probably the most Nintendo take on a clock you could imagine, featuring the sounds and characters from the company’s Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, Splatoon, and Ring Fit Adventure series. In fact, between those series, there are multiple sound stages, such as ‘Fossil Falls’ or ‘New Donk City’ from Super Mario Odyssey, which will feature their own characters and music. You’ll be able to download additional sound stages as well through an internet connection, though you’ll also require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.

As a fan of Odyssey, I’ll just say that if there is no ‘Steam Gardens’ track, there will be no money from me.

I’m taking this as my chance to share this music with more people. Enjoy!

The Alarmo isn’t only an alarm clock, though. It’ll also chime on the hour, every hour, if you want it to, and it’ll track your sleeping and waking habits over time so you have a detailed record of your nocturnal movements.

Plus, it can play relaxing Nintendo music as a soundscape when you get into bed with the aim of helping you get to sleep sooner. I already listen to soundscapes through my phone, and can’t imagine the Alarmo’s speaker is going to trump my phone’s, but the fact that it’s motion sensored would mean it could just see that you’re getting into bed and start playing, which might be more convenient.

If you’re interested in getting your hands on Nintendo’s ‘Alarmo’, it’ll set you back US$99.99, and is only available on Nintendo’s online store or its physical stores. For us Aussies though, it’s not up for order just yet.
