Monsters Unite in ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ Official Trailer

Warner Bros. has unleashed the official trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and it seems like our two favourite giant monsters have finally decided to put aside their differences and become… well, not exactly friends, but maybe more like grudging allies. Directed by Adam Wingard, the upcoming film will be the fifth instalment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise, picking up the narrative after the epic clash in 2021’s ‘Godzilla vs. Kong.’ In the upcoming instalment, Godzilla, now flaunting pink accents for some reason, and Kong, potentially on the brink of becoming a dad, team up against an unseen, formidable threat that challenges “their very existence.”

The official synopsis for the film reads, “This latest entry follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own. The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”

The menacing official trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hints at secrets buried deep within the Hollow Earth and a colossal threat that forces Kong and Godzilla into an uneasy alliance. As a seismometer detects tremors escalating near the Giza pyramids, a voiceover asks, “For most of civilization we believed that life could only exist on the surface of our planet. What else were we wrong about?” Amidst the chaos, Kong erupts from the ground and later Godzilla. We are then introduced to a forgotten empire, followed by the pair charging side-by-side. Adding to the mystery, a mini-Kong stumbles out of the shadows, catching even King Kong off guard.

Reprising their roles from the 2021 film are Rebecca Hall as Dr. Illene Andrews, Brian Tyree Henry as Bernie Hayes, and Kaylee Hottle as Jia. Joining the cast as newcomers to the franchise are Dan Stevens and Fala Chen. The screenplay for ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire‘ is penned by Terry Rossio, Jeremy Slater, and Simon Barrett. While talking to IGN, director Wingard revealed that breaking up Godzilla and King Kong after their big face-off just didn’t feel right. And that’s precisely why the two mighty creatures are joining forces this time. According to Wingard, “As soon as the (last) movie came out and the audiences started to see it, I was like, ‘You just can’t separate these two guys again.’ It’s too exciting having them in one movie. And now, the next one has to be about the continuation of that relationship, which is going to be the team-up.”

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is set to release in theatres on April 12, 2024.
