‘House of the Dragon’ Showrunner Reveals Key Dragon Details for Season 2

While not much is known about House of the Dragon season two, one thing is for certain – The second instalment of HBO’s stunning Game of Thrones prequel series will be fiery. At the recent FYC screening in Los Angeles, series co-creator Ryan Condal revealed a few key details about the upcoming season, confirming that House of the Dragon season two will introduce five new dragons to the mix.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Condal stated: “You’re going to meet five new dragons,” before revealing that season two is slated to go into production “very shortly” in 2023. The House of the Dragon showrunner, along with George R.R. Martin and eight cast members, took to the stage to watch the screening of the eighth episode of season one “The Lord of the Tides” and participate in a Q&A discussion with Josh Gad.

The actors present on the stage included Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower), Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen), Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon), Fabien Frankel (Criston Cole), Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower), Paddy Considine (King Viserys/Targaryen) and Emily Carey (young Alicent Hightower).

The confirmation that season two will feature five new fire breathers doesn’t sound surprising, considering the upcoming instalment was previously rumoured to dive into the Targaryen civil war storyline, which will show us the famous Dance of Dragons. The move would also please George R.R. Martin, who openly showed his displeasure towards the dragons featured in Game of Thrones.

“They were like all the same,” he revealed at the recently-held HBO’s FYC event. Martin further went on to add that the dragons he saw in the House of the Dragon were genuinely impressive. “They had personality,” he said. “They came alive. It came as great satisfaction to me.” With Season 2 getting five new flying lizards, we hope Martin would be elated.

Condal’s reveal, while interesting, stopped short of detailing any new plot points and instead left fans will a host of new questions. Unfortunately, it will be a long time before any answers are provided with House of the Dragon season two not expected to debut anytime before 2024 as HBO wants to focus on the scripts that they are “excited about”.
