‘House of the Dragon’ Official Trailer Brings War Back to Westeros
HBO has just released the official trailer for House of the Dragon, their upcoming Game of Thrones prequel set during one of Westeros’s greatest civil wars. Based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel Fire & Blood, which is set 200 years before the original series, viewers were given a glimpse into the bloody power struggle unfolding within House Targaryen.

The teaser sees Westeros in chaos over who will take the throne following the death of King Viserys I Targaryen. While custom dictates that the King’s firstborn should take the top spot, this would leave the ruling of Westeros to Visery’s daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen, and as we hear from a councilman in the clip, “no queen has ever sat on the Iron Throne.” As you’d expect, dirty politics, backstabbing, and bloodshed are all back on the menu for the prequel.
The star-studded ensemble cast includes Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Fabien Frankel and Rhys Ifans. Working behind the scenes with Martin is co-creator and co-showrunner Ryan Condal.
In addition to the trailer being released, fans can download a new augmented reality app, House of the Dragon: DracARys, to celebrate the arrival of the anticipated series. The app will allow each user to hatch their personalised, virtual dragon egg, enabling them to “raise” their dragon at home.
The prequel to Game of Thrones will be available to stream on Binge or watch on Foxtel weekly at the same time as the U.S. at 11.00am AEST starting from Monday, 22 August. For newbies wanting to catch up to speed, you can also watch all 8 seasons of Game of Thrones on the streaming platform.
