If you’re in the mood for some seriously scandalous state secrets, boy do we have a show for you – The Diplomat’s second season is launching on October 31, 2024, and we’re excited.

The first season of Netflix’s political drama followed Kate Wyler, who is assigned to act as the US’ ambassador to the UK and who, throughout the course of eight episodes, investigates what appears to be a terrorist attack against the UK. Her investigation culminates in the show’s season finale, which (no spoilers) raises some serious questions as to what the hell is going to happen next.

Thankfully, we don’t have to wait much longer, and even have a teaser trailer to check out!

Our First Look at ‘The Diplomat’ Season 2

In the trailer, we see Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler attending an event of some kind, together with her husband Hal Wyler, played by Rufus Sewell, when the pair are spotted by US Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney). There’s a tension between the three, which makes a degree of sense if you’ve watched the first season.

Enough beating around the bush, spoilers ahead.

See, the Wyler’s aren’t always a happy couple, but the first season ended with Hal’s supposed death in a state-backed bombing. Having seemingly survived, and with Kate’s realisation that the ‘terrorist’ attack that plagued the UK throughout the first season was an inside job, her relationship with her work changes significantly.

“Season 1 ended with Kate’s realisation that the attack on a British warship brought her to the UK wasn’t the work of a hostile nation — it was the British prime minister,” showrunner Debora Chan told Netflix.

“Now she has to prove it… so how do you investigate the PM? Who do you trust?”

With the introduction of VP Penn, things are set to get more complicated in the second season. Penn thinks Wyler is after her job, which is sure to create more distrust between the trio as they attempt to unravel just what is going on in the UK.

All Cast Members Confirmed So Far

While Russel, Sewell, and Janney will undoubtedly make up a tense trio throughout season two, there’s more to The Diplomat than just its main characters. Here’s everyone we know is coming back for season two, as well as some new names:

  • Keri Russell as Kate Wyler
  • Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler
  • Allison Janney as US Vice President Grace Penn
  • David Gyasi as UK foreign secretary Austin Dennison
  • Ato Essandoh as deputy chief of mission Stuart Hayford
  • Ali Ahn as CIA station chief Eidra Park
  • Nana Mensah as White House chief of staff Billie Appiah
  • Miguel Sandoval as US secretary of state Miguel Ganon
  • Michael McKean as US president William Rayburn
  • Celia Imrie as Margaret “Meg” Roylin
  • T’Nia Miller as Dennison’s sister Cecilia
  • Andy Milligan as Chief of Defense

While it’s been confirmed that Hal Wyler will be returning in season two, based on the end of the first season that wasn’t immediately clear: most assumed he’d have died in the explosion that served as the centrepoint of the final episode. In fact, Sewell, who plays Wylar, said that while he hopes his character survives, the ‘drama needs to be real’.

“All I know is that if you resolve it one way or another too quickly, we’re screwed. I like to think there are enough problems to last us ,” Sewell told Netflix. Here’s hoping he’s right!

How Many Episodes Will Season 2 Have?

Season one told a fantastic story in eight episodes, and we can expect season two to likely launch with the same. It’s not clear yet if the show will be dropped all in one since big bingeable sitting, or if it’ll be released week to week (though Netflix has been getting awfully fond of that second practice recently).

When is Season 2 Coming Out?

Season two of The Diplomat launches on 31 October, 2024, exclusively on Netflix. You can check it out here.
