Fender Launches Stunning “People Pleaser” Stratocaster With Modern Guitar Hero Steve Lacy
While there’s been some lamentation that the era of the guitar might be coming to an end, thanks to the assertion that computers and software have taken the place of traditional instruments as the dominant means of making music, we couldn’t disagree more. In fact, a whole new generation of artists – and the players they inspire – has continued to pick up guitars and use them alongside innovative new technologies to create music that sounds unlike anything that’s come before. One such artist is the highly inventive Steve Lacy and now Fender has announced Lacy’s very own signature guitar, the undeniably cool “People Pleaser” Stratocaster.

Specialising in delightfully dirty tones, the new Strat boasts a unique combination of Player Plus Noiseless pickups and an onboard custom-voiced fuzz circuit designed to deliver aggressive sounds ranging from overdrive to fuzz. Fender also claims it balances that aggressive spectrum with the expressiveness of a crystalline high end, throaty mids, and taut deep lows.
Lacy’s signature guitar has looks to match its outstanding sonic performance. Based on his favourite vintage Fender, it features an alder body sporting a brand-new and entirely unique “Chaos Burst” finish. The guitar’s custom neck plate is stamped with Lacy’s original artwork and the back plate has a unique blue and green chequered pattern. Plus, a custom dice fretboard inlay is located at the 12th fret, while Lacy’s signature adorns the back of the guitar’s headstock.
All of this amounts to a fitting instrument for one of the finest musicians working today; one who’s undeniably highly proficient from a technical standpoint, while also making the kind of emotionally rich music that high levels of technicality can undermine in the hands of lesser artists. Having helped redefine the sound of modern R&B and soul with his band THE INTERNET, the Grammy-winning Lacy has since gone on to reach new – ahem – heights with his second solo album, last year’s Gemini Heights.
While there’s no guarantee this new guitar will imbue you with the same talent and creativity as the fellow whose name it bears, it certainly couldn’t hurt. Besides, it’ll help you look cool and have a whole lot of fun either way. If you’d like to get your hands on one, the Fender Steve Lacy “People Pleaser” Stratocaster will set you back AUD$2,549.
