It’s not black baby, it’s deep plum. Joe Alwyn is in his fashion era, and while he’s usually dressed to the nines in a Dior suit, JW Anderson overcoat, and a pair of Salomon sneakers, he turned things up to eleven for the 2025 BAFTAs with a triple plum suit that debuts the latest spring/summer ’25 Emporio Armani collection.
The suit is perfectly drapey for a modern take on the 1950s aesthetic with a wide-lapel double-breasted jacket that harks back to all the great EA suits from the 1990s. This is matched with a lightly-flared trouser that seems to take a note from Kendrick Lamar’s bell-bottomed Super Bowl Celine Marco Jeans moment. Except, we’re not rocking a pair of retro Nike Air DT Max ’96s on the feets here. Alwyn has opted for patent-leather dress shoes from the brand, and it’s a smart choice.
This is the first time we’ve seen a look from this particular collection off the runway stage, but it’s unlikely to be the last as this 1990s double-breasted and flared suit trend starts to take off. If you want to get on board early, check out designer suits from Emporio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Brunello Cucinelli, Gucci, and Maison Margiela.
Steady riding the wave of his fashion journey, Joe Alwyn is one of the most fashionable men in Hollywood right now. He’s been dressed by some of the biggest designer names in the business, but he has an affinity towards the Kim Jones era at Dior. “I really like how he collaborates really closely, not just with people, but with artists and other brands,” he said in an interview with GQ. “There’s an inclusiveness to his work. He invites other people into his world through design.”
Some of Alwyn’s favourite brands include “Kaws, Nike, Stone Island, Birkenstocks.” However, he’s also a fan of designer JW Anderson, Red Wing boots and Salomons. “I’ve been wearing this tan bomber from JW Anderson that I really, really like,” he said in the interview. “I had these Red Wing boots that I probably didn’t take off for, like, 12 years or something. Now, I’m wearing these Salomons that were made in collaboration with this French store called The Broken Arm. They just feel so sturdy and, like, they’ll last a very long time.”
The Broken Arm sneakers mentioned are a very sought-after Salomon X-DESALPES x The Broken Arm collaboration that was released back in 2022 and is now very hard to find on the secondary market with prices hovering above AUD$1,000. It’s a deep-cut sneaker that displays his true love for fashion.
Where the English actor and songwriter’s fashion goes next is anyone’s guess, but we’re sure he’s more focused on his role in the modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’, set in London.
