  • Marvel Studios has officially set the MCU’s standalone X-Men reboot for a release date of 5 May 2028.
  • The new-look mutant team features Sadie Sink (Jean Grey), Kit Connor (Cyclops), Samara Weaving (Emma Frost), and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister.
  • Directed by Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts), the film will bypass previously adapted storylines to draw inspiration from Chris Claremont and Jonathan Hickman’s iconic comic runs.

For over two decades, the X-Men have belonged to Fox, which has kept them (mostly) separated from the larger MCU. There’s no denying that Fox has produced some amazing X-Men films, while Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen forever cemented their legacies as Wolverine, Professor X and Magneto. However, it’s time for fresh faces to lead mutantkind.

While many of the Fox-era X-Men stars will return in Avengers: Doomsday, Disney has confirmed that they will be rebooting the X-Men following this film. With a handful of confirmed actors, a director attached and a release date set, anticipation and excitement for this standalone X-Men film is already ramping up in a big way.

For those eager to see how the X-Men are once again reimagined in live-action, this time officially in the MCU, we’ve covered everything you need to know below. This also includes some possible comic book stories that this upcoming reboot could draw from.

MCU X-Men Reboot: Confirmed Release Date

The X-Men Reboot film has been given a release date of May 5, 2028.

Director Jake Schreier, known for another recent MCU film, Thunderbolts, is already attached to the project.

Clearly eager to get the ball rolling on integrating a new generation of X-Men into the MCU, this film is the first project slated for release after Avengers: Secret Wars drops at the end of 2027.

Meet the New MCU Mutants: Full Cast Revealed

During D23 this year, Sadie Sink (Jean Grey) took to the stage to help announce this new wave of X-Men actors.

Alongside a cast largely made up of a new generation of actors, Aussie star Samara Weaving is also confirmed to be inheriting the role of Emma Frost, previously played by January Jones in X-Men: First Class.

However, there was one massive X-Men casting announcement to come out of D23

Adam Driver Confirmed as Mister Sinister

As one of the most iconic and dangerous villains of the X-Men, it’s about time we got a live-action Mister Sinister. To make matters even more exciting, Adam Driver’s casting in the role promises big things. After all, the actor has been linked to what feels like an endless stream of Marvel roles over the years, so for him to actually say yes to Mister Sinister feels like an early Christmas present for Marvel fans.

“Kevin and I have been talking for years about me joining MCU,” Driver said in the video reveal made at D23. The Star Wars actor added afterwards how they had finally “found something perfect with characters I feel very deeply about.”

That cast for the next generation already has a great mix of unknown actors and credited stars. There are still plenty of characters yet to be cast, so be sure to check back in with this article as we keep you updated on all the latest X-Men casting details.

For now, here is every X-Men character and actor confirmed for the X-Men reboot so far:

  • Jean Grey: Sadie Sink
  • Kit Connor: Scott Summers/Cyclops
  • Samara Weaving: Emma Frost
  • Christopher Abbott: Charles Xavier/Professor X
  • Inde Navarrette: Rogue
  • Maya Boyd: Storm
  • Adam Driver: Mister Sinister

Beyond the Dark Phoenix: Where the MCU X-Men Are Headed

With over 80 years of comic book material to work from, the possibilities feel almost endlesswhen it comes to anticipating what story this film and future projects will tell.

In saying that, the announcement that Mister Sinister will be the big baddie, at least for this initial leg of the X-Men’s journey in the MCU, does at least allow us to narrow things down a bit. This, coupled with some telling comments from the director, gives us strong clues about where the X-Men could be heading in the future.

During an interview with Good Morning America, Schreier was quick to promise that the upcoming reboot will steer clear of stories told previously. Rather, he wants to dive into “the things that haven’t recently been done.” What does this mean? Well, for starters, we’re not likely to get yet another adaptation of the Dark Phoenix Saga, so that’s a relief.

While this tease from Schreier is interesting, his follow-up opens up even more room for speculation, with the director citing particular interest in the comic book stories told by Chris Claremont and, even more interestingly, Jonathan Hickman.

The Classic Era: Humanity vs. Mutantkind

Claremont’s legendary X-Men run lasted for decades. The writer managed to introduce and create characters and narratives that have now come to define many of the X-Men. Some of the most popular Claremont X-Men stories include:

  • The Dark Phoenix Saga
  • Days of Future Past
  • God Loves, Man Kills
  • Mutant Massacre
  • Proteus

There are a few on this list that have already been ticked off. Despite this, there are decades’ worth of Claremont works that can be adapted. Many of which focus on the idea of mutants being a hunted, troubled people cast aside by humanity.

Bringing Hickman’s Krakoa Era to the Big Screen

Claremont is the mastermind behind the legacy of the X-Men. However, Hickman is largely responsible for the iconic group’s modern success in the comic book world. In particular, the writer’s 2019 House of X and Powers of X series completely reinvented the X-Men’s status quo.

Instead of mutants trying to live alongside humanity on Earth, Professor X and Magneto create Krakoa, a sovereign mutant nation. Within Krakoa, the two develop a unique social structure and political system for mutantkind. I’m not saying that the MCU will introduce Krakoa anytime soon. Rather, the idea of mutantkind functioning as a separate society from humanity is definitely something that could be explored in the reboot film.

Not only is it a radically different look for the X-Men than we’ve seen previously, but it also allows them to operate in their own standalone universe. Practically speaking, this would make a lot of sense if the MCU does want to begin telling standalone stories again. What’s more, the Krakoan era of the X-Men comics really shines a light on the characters Emma Frost, Storm and Mister Sinister. As three of the first six characters to be cast, this could be a further hint that this is the direction the X-Men reboot will be leaning towards.

Final Thoughts

The MCU’s X-Men Reboot has a confirmed release date and foundational cast; this is true. However, there is still much Disney will no doubt release in the coming months. For now, Schreier isn’t confirming a specific storyline. But his comments suggest that the reboot won’t simply be X-Men: Greatest Hits.

The director later added in the same interview with Good Morning America that there are “so many stories that are still untold to honour and reach into,” which is perhaps the most encouraging clue yet.

If Marvel really does follow that philosophy, the reboot could take familiar characters and place them in a story that feels completely new. After nearly two decades of Fox movies, this is no doubt exactly what the X-Men need.
