Some things are just so expected that they often go completely unnoticed. On Nike’s newest React Flyknit, the Phantom, the shoelaces don’t go unnoticed for the simple fact that they aren’t even there. The minimal look of the React line is made even more minimal by losing the laces altogether.
That doesn’t mean that you’re going to have all the support of a sandal. The Phantom uses elastic yarns around the tongue and the collar to keep the fit snug and provide plenty of structure and stability. The added benefit of this approach is that the Phantom is much more able to move with your foot as compared to the traditional laced version.
Getting the shoe on and off is accomplished by using the pull tab on the tongue and another on the ankle. The midsole is a full-length React foam while the outsole is rubber, with a TPU heel clip.
The version of the shoe that accompanied the announcement features a blend of pink, purple, blue, and red yarn for the upper with a black pattern that resembles the tongue and toe box. The Swoosh is outlined in black on the side. The Nike Phantom React is currently only available for members in the Greater China area, but a global release has been announced for May 2.
