Welcome to Sneaker News #56. Fresh from her Coachella headline set, it’s Billie Eilish taking the headline this week with her take on the classic Nike Air Force 1. It’s not the only Air Force 1 release this week though with a metallic throwback being rehashed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the shoe. Elsewhere, it’s all about New Balance and Nike. New Balance has big releases lined-up with Salehe Bembury and Joe Freshgoods while Nike is bringing back the Air Max Flight 95. Check these and more out below.
Air Force 1 Billie ‘Mushroom’
Billie Eilish’s collaboration with Nike continues as she takes on the hugely popular Air Force 1. Taking the neutral tones that have dominated her ‘Happier Than Ever’ era, she’s preferenced environmentally preferred materials for her take on the iconic silhouette. The biggest difference here to the original silhouette is the velcro straps that line the shoes. They look very snug and also innovative. Grab them now from Nike.
New Balance 2002RJ1 V1 ‘Dawn Glow’
Chicago’s Joe Freshgoods is one of the most sought-after footwear designers right now. It’s New Balance that has secured the key releases so far and the latest is another winner. Teaming up with Black Soles, a New Balance community focused on amplifying Black creative voices, Freshgoods has delivered a new take on this 2002 classic silhouette. The colourway is muted and sleek with tones of beiges and browns delivered across suede and leather overlays. Join the raffle over at Highs and Lows for your chance to cop this popular release.
Air Jordan 1 Zoom Air CMFT ‘Dark Iris’
The Air Jordan 1 is a certified classic – a silhouette not to be messed with. The Air Jordan 1 Zoom Air CMFT, however, makes some small tweaks to make the shoes lightweight. The changes are all seen in the low profile cushioning while the upper remains largely untouched. Genuine and synthetic materials combine on this pair with an exposed foam tongue for a retro look. The ‘Dark Iris’ combined with the white overlays is a choice move too.
New Balance x Salehe Bembury 574 YURT
Versace’s Salehe Bembury is without a doubt one of the most important visionaries in footwear right now. He brings his eye to New Balance once again for the 574 YURT. Inspired by the outdoors, these shoes are durable, comfortable and breathable but they also look great. Mixing hot pink and blue with neutral tones, the upper is a mixture of suede overlays and mesh underlays. They also have a whistle molded into the heel just in case you’re actually taking these into the great outdoors. Keep your eye on Subtype for release information.
Air Force 1 Mid ‘University Red and Midnight Navy’
If you’re shopping in Australia, you might not resonate with the Americana look of this shoe but regardless this is a great-looking pair of shoes. This release celebrates the 40th anniversary of the AF-1 by rejuvenating this 1997 look. The metallic blue overlays are the eye-catcher here but the red jewel Swish is also an impressive addition. Look a little closer and you’ll also notice the translucent rubber outsole. Don’t sleep on these when they drop 28th April.
Air Zoom Flight 95 ‘Black Metallic’
More metallic vibes here with the Air Zoom Flight 95 ‘Black Metallic’. These shoes were some of the first to popularise the Zoom Air technology in Basketball and remain a nostalgic peek into where footwear designers thought performance shoes were going in 1995. This release is the OG from 95, a futuristic, innovative shoe with wavy lines and ‘bug eyes’ on the mid-sole. The metallic overlays on the upper and the midsole envision a space-ready future that hasn’t quite arrived yet. Nab them from Nike on 6th May.
New Balance 550 ‘Vibrant Orange’
This might be one of our favourite colourways of the hugely popular New Balance 550 yet. The combination of royal blue, vibrant orange, and crisp white is a killer combination, particularly on one of the staple sneakers of the past few years. Inspired by the original 550 basketball shoe, these feature a synthetic leather upper and a lace-up closure for that perfect fit. New Balance will drop these on 5th May.
