Travis Scott’s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Collaboration is Not For Hypebeasts

Whether it’s creating the hottest sneakers on earth with Nike or creating your own Cactus Jack watch with Audemars Piguet, Travis Scott’s name knows no boundaries when it comes to lethal collabs. Owning your fair share of APs is going to attract a healthy dose of watch lovers’ attention and over the years we’ve come to know Scott as one of the music industry’s sneakiest collectors. However, owning a rare piece is one thing, but creating your own with one of the biggest names in the industry? Well, that’s almost unheard of.

Travis Scott joins a short list of collaborators for the brand, including Jay-Z (2005) and LeBron James (2013) with his Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Openworked “Cactus Jack” Limited Edition. The watch will be limited to just 200 pieces globally and will set you back around US$201,000 (according to Hodinkee) should you want to get your hands on one. Interestingly, the watch will be sold exclusively through shop.travisscott.com.

Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Openworked “Cactus Jack” Limited Edition / 41 mm

Reference no.: 26585CM.OO.D301VE.01

Case diameter: 41mm
Movement type: Self-winding calibre 5135
Power reserve: 40 hours
Water resistance: 20 m
Case materials: Case, bezel and screw-locked crown in brown ceramic
Strap materials: Brown calfskin leather strap with textured jeans effect

Of course, it’s brown. Ceramic to be precise and adorned with white gold hexagonal screws and a sapphire dial that shows off the open-worked Calibre 5135 movement. The ceramic itself is responsible for the case and bracelet studs and has been created by yttrium-stabilised Zirconium Oxide powder (Zr2O), which Audemars Piguet then combine with a binder and metal oxides to give it its final chocolate colour after the ceramic has been sintered at over 1000°C. We’re not scientists, but it looks pretty sweet.

The movement itself is also a work of art that combines an array of exotic metals, including rhodium-toned components with pink-gold-toned hues around the day, month and date transparent subdials (9, 12 and 3 o’clock). The hour, minute and counter hands are crafted in gold and covered with brown PVD before being filled with a white luminescent material that turns blue in the dark.

You won’t miss the Cactus Jack references found, most notably, on the typography of the calendar and week indications, hand of the day subdial with the brand’s logo, smiley face with its mouth sewn shut on the moon phase at 6 o’clock, and a pink gold folding clasp that’s been engraved with “Audemars Piguet” and “Travis Scott”. Finally, the case back is engraved with “Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar,” “Limited Edition of 200 Pieces” and “Utopia is a state of mind” which references Scott’s latest album.

“Watchmaking, to me, is the ultimate combo of engineering, fashion, tech and design—a harmony of precision, craftsmanship and perfect timing. I approached this collaboration similar to sampling or starting a beat, taking inspiration from classics while introducing innovation to push them into the future. I’m beyond amped about the results, a first-ever for the iconic Royal Oak. For it to be my brother Francois’ final project as CEO of AP makes it even more epic – we are sending him out with a Mega fucking epic mic drop … LETTTSSSSS GOOOOOO.”

The Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Openworked “Cactus Jack” Limited Edition / 41 mm is limited to just 200 pieces worldwide and will be available exclusively through shop.travisscott.com.
