Hublot’s New Big Bang Magic Gold Edition Has a Bit of Razzle Dazzle About It

If ever there was a watch whose name promised the world then it has to be the Big Bang Unico Full Magic Gold from Hublot. For fans of the flamboyant watchmaker, this new release is important for two reasons. First, it takes the iconic Big Bang model – with the in-house Unico movement – and, second, pairs that with Hublot’s Magic Gold case. The result is a bold watch that has a case forged from a precious metal exclusive to Hublot and is powered by an intricate chronograph movement. With 2023 marking the 18th birthday of the Big Bang, this latest iteration is sure to focus the watch world’s attention on Hublot’s most famous model.

Hublot has always been a bit of an enigma. Founded by an Italian, headquartered in Switzerland and given a French name, it’s not the easiest brand to pin down. But there’s one thing we all agree on – the Big Bang is the brand’s defining watch. In 2015 Hublot marked 10 years of this iconic watch with the release of the Big Bang Unico Full Magic Gold. That watch is back as Hublot celebrates this latest milestone.

Marketed as a return to the basics, this Big Bang model includes the collection’s core DNA. The angular case with its integrated rubber strap is instantly recognisable and features a plain bezel with six visible screws. It’s a substantial case with a diameter of 44mm and large titanium pushers. Of course, this variant is particularly special because it’s made from Magic Gold.

Created by Hublot, Magic Gold is made by combining 24k liquid gold and a high-tech ceramic powder to create a patented 18k-gold alloy. It’s scratch-proof and has a hardness rating of 1000 Vickers. To give you an idea of how durable this metal is, normal gold is only 400 Vickers and hardened steel 600 Vickers.

The eye-catching case displays a wonderful skeleton dial that in turn displays the Unico chronograph movement beneath. It’s the upgraded Unico 2 movement that is thinner than the Unico 1 and has an impressive 72hrs power reserve. It sits below a handsome dial that also has the signature Big Bang DNA. There are the skeleton hands we’re fans of, two chronograph sub-dials, and Arabic numerals. All are crafted from satin-finished 3N gold.

After 18 years the Big Bang is all grown up and this celebratory release is the perfect expression of the collection’s ethos. The Hublot Big Bang Unico Full Magic Gold is limited to 200 pieces and priced at EUR €40,600.
