If Superman were to own a wristwatch, it would probably be a Longines. From nearly two centuries ago to this very day, the Swiss luxury brand has been crafting the finest precision instruments—namely timepieces–for explorers of land, air, and sea alike. Nowhere is that more evident than with its recently introduced Spirit Collection, a line of vintage-themed aviation watches that combine heritage design with superior technology. With the introduction of a new chronograph comes the latest chapter for this exemplary line. The first of the series to feature a flyback function, the new Longines Spirit Flyback pays direct homage to the brand’s own legacy of innovation and performance and looks downright spectacular in the process.
With a flyback chronograph, users can measure elapsed time by resetting the sweeping second hand without stopping the chronograph itself. This is particularly helpful to pilots, who use the flyback function as a quick and successive way to time different flight stages whilst navigating the skies. The complication is also fundamental to Longines’ distinguished history, whereas the brand equipped some of its earliest models with a flyback function and even patented the flyback chronograph in 1936. That’s in addition to the brand’s many other achievements, such as when pilot Richard Byrd used Longines instruments when he became the first man to fly over the South Pole.
Suffice it to say, the new Longines Spirit Flyback brings some exciting heritage to the table along with the latest cutting-edge technology. Under the skin, a certified chronometer movement with magnetic resistance and a silicon balance spring cultivates supreme precision and a power reserve of 68 hours. It’s revealed through a transparent case back, which also displays signature engravings on a personalised weight.
Providing further distinction is a range of eye-catching finishes such as satin, matt, or polished. Additional features include a bi-directional bezel with a coloured ceramic insert, a black or blue sunray dial, a 42mm steel case, and an interchangeable strap of either prime steel, brown leather, or blue fabric (a beige NATO strap is also available). Each strap employs a new micro-adjustment system to ensure maximum comfort and wearability.
The spirit of exploration is alive and well and Longines is here to prove it. Once the brand of choice amongst aviators and other professionals, their high-performance watches are no less fitting for everyday adventurers. The new Longines Spirit Flyback certainly continues the trend and retains a pioneering essence with a stunning layout to match. Strap up and conquer, gents.
