OMEGA’s New Constellation Dials are Made From Real-Life Meteorites

Swiss watchmaker OMEGA has no shortage of celestial ties, from the early days of the Gemini 4 mission to the famed Speedmaster Moonwatch, but the maison’s latest effort is truly out of this world. The new OMEGA Constellation Meteorite collection features 20 of the brand’s best-selling watches revamped with dials that feature elements of a real-life meteorite. Why? Because who doesn’t love the thought of slapping a 4 billion-year-old space rock to your wrist?

According to OMEGA, the trace elements come from the Muonionalusta meteorite, which is thought to be the oldest discovered meteorite in Earth’s history. First uncovered in 1906 near the village of Kitkiöjärvi in Sweden, Muonionalusta is famous for its unique ‘Widmanstätten texture’, a pattern that is formed by the meteorite’s extremely slow cooling rate. As a result, its surface features a unique, almost cross-hatching design effect, which OMEGA has utilised for the dials of its latest collection.

Iconic pieces such as the Co-Axial Master Chronometer have been revitalised with this new dial design, with OMEGA also confirming that its “most advanced colour treatment technologies” were employed to capture a wide variety of finishes. Considering the fact that there are five choices across the 41mm, 29mm, 28mm and 25mm size categories, equating to 20 models in total, the level of individuality is not to be overlooked.

“The Muonionalusta meteorite is possibly the oldest known meteorite on Earth, at over 4.5 billion years old,” OMEGA said in a statement. “Thanks to the natural pattern found within this ancient space material, every slice is unique. For OMEGA customers, this guarantees that no two dials will ever be the same. The watch you choose for your wrist will reveal its own individual character.”

Importantly, OMEGA hasn’t stopped at simply adorning its latest Constellation collection with precious space rocks, loading up a number of pieces with diamonds. The 29mm Co-Axial Master Chronometer has been elevated with a PVD Moonshine Gold finish, complete with diamond hour markers, a diamond-paved bezel and a stamped Constellation Observatory medallion on the caseback. The 28mm and 25mm models also cop a bevy of diamonds across the bi-colour steel and 18K Sedna gold cases, which arrive in colours such as icy blue and lilac.

The star of the show, however, is undoubtedly the 41 mm Co-Axial Master Chronometer, which lands in a stainless steel case with a black ceramic bezel. While that isn’t too much of a stretch from the standard issue release, this model’s meteorite dial cops a rhodium-grey galvanic colour treatment, alongside contrasting hands, indexes, and Constellation star with a black PVD treatment.

The new OMEGA Constellation Meteorite collection comprises 20 models, all of which are available now. Pricing starts from AUD$14,025 for the 25mm Constellation steel on steel model, all the way up to AUD$70,400 for the 41mm Constellation Moonshine Gold on Moonshine Gold edition. You can check out the full collection on the OMEGA online boutique.
