TAG Heuer & Porsche Celebrate 50 Years of the 911 Carrera RS 2.7

In Partnership with TAG Heuer

We’re passionate about a great number of things here at Man of Many, but watches and cars have well and truly secured their place right at the top of our list of enthusiasms. So when two giants – one from each of those worlds – come together for an epic collaboration, well, they go from having our curiosity to having our attention. One such collaboration is now upon us. Marking the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 – the very first Porsche 911 to bear the Carrera name – the collab sees the legendary automaker and the watch masters at TAG Heuer (makers of an iconic Carrera of another kind entirely) join forces to release two limited-edition chronographs in tribute.

Built for Speed

From the get-go, the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 was always going to be a special car. Both the fastest German production automobile of its time and the most powerful 911 that motoring enthusiasts could purchase to use on the street, it was a road-legal vehicle that could also be used to enter racing events. That spirit of elite performance in the everyday runs through TAG Heuer’s Carrera timepieces too, as their refined design means they look perfectly at home in the office or on the street, while also being engineered for optimal timekeeping and legibility in high-speed racing conditions.

With the car and watch sharing so much more than just a name, it feels all too fitting that one Carrera is now being used to celebrate the other. Recreating the red and blue from the 911 Carrera RS 2.7’s original range of 27 vivid colours and embracing its two-tone aesthetic, TAG Heuer’s limited edition watches are based on the iconic 42mm Carrera Chronograph. As such, they boast an elegant tricompax layout with minute and hour chronograph counters at 3 and 9 o’clock, as well as a permanent second indicator and date window at the 6 o’clock position.

When Only the Elite Will Do

Only the most advanced movement is worthy of Porsche’s storied racing machine, so the Carrera Chronographs have been fitted with TAG Heuer’s Calibre Heuer 02. Manufactured in-house, the movement offers up a power reserve of 80 hours and is visible through the timepiece’s crystal case back. Its oscillating mass has been custom-made so that it represents Porsche’s three-spoke steering wheel and it also bears both TAG Heuer and Porsche’s historic logos.

Numbers are strictly limited with only 500 of the Blue Edition to be manufactured and an even more exclusive 250 of the Red Edition. Whichever you choose, nods to Porsche’s eye for detail can be found throughout each piece.

A Blue Blur

The Blue Edition features a finely polished steel case, which, along with its rhodium-plated indexes, hours and minute hands, is designed to echo the 911’s signature chrome door handles, mirrors, and window frames. A smooth white opaline dial contrasts with the azurage finish of the sub-counters, while simultaneously helping the blue lacquered details throughout shine.

The watch’s right sub-counter recalls the aesthetic of Porsche’s unmistakable rims, while a bold colour stripe and the Carrera logo are a final nod to the elite racer. Whether you wear the watch with its sporty fabric strap – bearing the Porsche logo and Carrera markings – or the accompanying steel bracelet made of ergonomic H-shaped links, it’ll turn heads as fast as a 911 roaring down a straight.

The Red Racer

The Red Edition, meanwhile, boasts an 18K 5N rose gold case matched by its crown, pushers, and the screw-down sapphire case back. Again, the striking white dial catches the eye, but this time it’s framed by a Guards Red circular line. The applied indexes, permanent second indicator and hour and minute hands are all rose gold in colour, while highlights of red throughout combine with the luxurious red alligator strap and solid rose gold pin buckle to add the finishing touches.

It doesn’t matter if you’re talking about the car or the watch, the name Carrera brings to mind only the most elite of performance. Now the racing spirit of the former has been distilled into the latter, resulting in a timepiece race enthusiasts will chase long after the total of 750 limited edition pieces have sold out. If you’re a fan of TAG Heuer, Porsche, or both – and come on, who isn’t? – don’t miss your chance to secure a piece of motoring history.
