Fitzroy is a foodie’s paradise, and if you’re anything like us, deciding where to eat can be a (deliciously) tough choice. Whether you’re seeking a hot spot for a casual lunch with friends, or a dinner that lingers late into the night, Fitzroy is a neighbourhood with some of the best restaurants in Melbourne. We’ve done the hard work (read: eating our way around Fitzroy) to find the lunch & dinner spots that really hit the mark. From quick and casual options like Shop Ramen and Fitz Cafe, to special occasion eateries like Cutler & Co. and Marion, these are the Fitzroy restaurants you must try at least once.
Best Restaurants in Fitzroy at a Glance
Let’s look at some of the best restaurants in Fitzroy at a glance:
- Best overall: Marion
- Best for a dinner date: Bar Liberty
- Best for casual lunch: Fitz Cafe & Rooftop
- Best for a celebration: Cutler & Co
- Best for drinks: Neighbourhood Wine
Alright, now let’s go onto the big list of where you should eat in Fiztroy!
1. Marion
- What we like: Marion’s wine list is a standout, perfect for those who love to pair their meal with the right drop.
- Take note: It can get busy, so book ahead!
The Vibe
Marion is one of the most well-loved Fitzroy restaurants; people come from far and wide (even south of the Yarra!) to visit Marion. It has a relaxed, warm atmosphere that’s somehow both upmarket and casual at the same time. The interior is sleek and modern but not over the top, and the natural light pouring in through the big windows makes it a great spot for people-watching along Gertrude street. It’s also got a great al fresco dining section out front, which is a beautiful (dog friendly!) spot to while the day away when Melbourne’s weather is turning it on.
The Food
The menu at Marion is creative and refined – celebrating fresh, seasonal ingredients. You’ll find everything from light, flavourful small plates like chickpea panisse with whipped ricotta, to hearty mains like confit and & roasted duck leg that are perfect for sharing (or keeping all to yourself – no judgement here). You can also opt for the Chef’s Selection if you don’t want to have to choose (it’s hard!)– which comes with about 9 dishes, including starters and dessert.
The Drinks
Now, let’s talk about the wine – because at Marion, it’s practically a love language. Their wine list is a true labour of love, featuring a carefully curated selection of local and international drops. Whether you’re a wine aficionado or just enjoy a good glass of vino, there’s something here for everyone. If you have no idea what you’re doing, there staff are super knowledgable and friendly and will help you find the perfect pairing for your meal. If you’re more into cocktails or beer, they’ve got you covered there too, with a small simple but mighty selection that’s just as thoughtfully chosen.
- Address: 53 Gertrude St, Fitzroy VIC 3065
- Phone: 7 days 12pm-10pm
- Hours: (03) 9419 6262
2. Cutler & Co.
- What we like: (WE LOVE) the dry-aged O’connor rib-eye.
- Take note: It’s a bit pricier, so it’s great for special occasions. It’s also a set-menu – no a la carte options.
The Vibe
Housed in an old metalworks factory, Cutler & Co. has been transformed into one of Fitzroy’s most must-visit dining destinations. Helmed by renowned chef Andrew McConnell, Cutler & Co focuses on elevating Australian cuisine with a creative twist. Anyone who’s anyone has visited Cutler & Co. at least once. The vibe here is certainly up-market – but it’s not pretentious. The staff are attentive but don’t hover – and yet somehow, whenever your wine glass is about to run dry, they’re right there to top you up.
The Food
At Cutler & Co, the food is nothing short of art on a plate. The menu is a seasonal set menu with a first course, entree, main and dessert (there are three options to choose from each course). Expect innovative dishes that play with textures and flavours, from perfectly cooked seafood, to juicy and tender meats, and incredible vegetable dishes that are almost too beautiful to eat (but you’ll definitely want to). We’d definitely recommend supplementing your main for the Cutler & Co. signature dry-aged 1.1kg O’connor rib-eye. You’ll never look at beef the same way again.
The Drinks
The drinks at Cutler & Co are just as thoughtfully curated as the food. Their wine list is extensive, with a strong focus on boutique Australian producers, but you’ll also find some fantastic international options. The staff here know their stuff and are always happy to guide you to a wine that’ll level up your meal. If you’re in the mood for something different, Cutler & Co’s cocktail list is equally impressive, featuring classic drinks and more inventive options.

3. La Vineria By Noi
- What we like: An intimate spot with a cosy vibe.
- Take note: The menu is quite traditional, so you won’t find many gluten free or vegan substitutes.
The Vibe
La Vineria By Noi is one of the best spots for authentic Italian in Fitzroy. The decor is simple and rustic, with just the right amount of European flair. Dimly lit and cosy, it’s a great spot for a date night or a casual dinner with a group of friends. The staff are friendly without being over-bearing.
The Food
When it comes to the food at La Vineria By Noi, the focus is on traditional Italian flavours done right. The menu is filled with classic Italian fare that’s hearty, comforting, and bursting with flavour. Expect to find fresh, handmade pasta, rich sauces, and perfectly cooked meats that taste like they’ve come straight out of Nonna’s kitchen. The ingredients are high quality and the portions are generous – just the way Italian food should be. Stand-out dishes include the handmade burrata, and the Mortadella pizza with smoked scamorza, mortadella, balsamic glaze, and crushed pistachio. For pasta, we’d suggest the orecchiette la vineria (pork sausage, ‘nduja, chilli, and pecorino).
The Drinks
No Italian meal is complete without a good glass of vino, and La Vineria By Noi has you covered with a small but thoughtfully curated wine list – including a strong selection of Italian wines, and some local Aussie wines out of the Yarra Valley and Margaret River, just to name a few.

- Phone: (03) 9419 1908
- Hours: Sun/Wed/Thurs 5.30pm-9.30pm, Fri & Sat 6.30-10.30pm
4. Freda’s Bistro
- What we like: It feels like an upscale pub dining experience. Sounds weird, but it works!
- Take note: Not many vegetarian / vegan options for plant-based diners (plenty of gluten-free options, though!) Also, only open 3 days a week!
The Vibe
Freda’s Bistro is an interesting one – the vibe is like a bougie pub dining experience. It’s casual yet elegant. And somehow, it works. While only open 3 days a week (which means getting a booking can be tough), it’s worth booking ahead to nab a spot at Freda’s. While on paper it doesn’t have an extensive food or drink menu, you don’t actually notice. The quality and creativity of what is served far outweighs the small menu. Plus, the service is so friendly and warm, you’ll find yourself wanting to book in for a meal at Freda’s regularly.
The Food
Now onto the food: it’s classic bistro fare that’s just a little bit elegant too. The menu is full of familiar favourites like Rigatoni alla Vodka and beef gnocchi, all done with a fresh, modern twist. You’ve also got more niche options like anchovy toast and beef tartare with pickled onions and jalapeno. The portions are generous, so you definitely won’t leave hungry. If you’re in the mood for comfort food that hits the spot, Freda’s is the place to go.
The Drinks
When it comes to drinks, Freda’s Bistro keeps things straightforward. You’ll find bottles and wine by the glass from countries like Italy, Germany, France and Australia. Into beer? You’ve got options like Peroni and Stomping Ground lager. And for those who fancy a cocktail, Freda’s offers a few classic options like an Aperol spritz and amaretto sour that always hit the spot.

5. The Fitz Cafe & Rooftop
- What we like: The rooftop offers stunning views over Fitzroy. We also love the boozy brunch on the weekends.
- Take note: Customer service can be a bit hit or miss.
The Vibe
The Fitz Cafe & Rooftop is a Fitzroy institution, and a great restaurant for both lunch and dinner. Downstairs, the cafe has a relaxed, eclectic vibe, ideal for a casual brunch or a mid-arvo coffee. But the real fun happens when you head upstairs to the rooftop. With stunning views over Fitzroy, the rooftop really pops off on the weekend.
The Food
The food offering at The Fitz has a bit of everything, blending international influences with local ingredients, offering everything from burgers and pizzas to fresh salads and tapas-style dishes. We wouldn’t call the food menu at The Fitz ground-breaking or inventive by any means, but it is consistent in its offering, and we reckon that’s pretty important when it comes to a good dining experience.
The Drinks
The Fitz Cafe & Rooftop has your drink needs sorted from morning to night. Whether it’s a perfectly brewed coffee in the morning (or a Bloody Mary – both solid morning drink choices), to beers and wine with lunch and cocktails to kick off your evening, there’s something for every drinker. The drink menu is on the smaller side but again, we kind of love not being overwhelmed by choice. It’s simple, classic food and drink done right.

- Phone: (03) 9417 5794

6. Neighbourhood Wine
- What we like: The wine list is extensive, plus there are some incredible wine-by-the-glass prices.
- Take note: It can get busy, so book ahead if you want to secure a table (especially for larger groups).
The Vibe
Neighbourhood Wine in Fitzroy is the perfect day to night venue, with a great al fresco section street-side, and two separate dining areas upstairs. Housed in a building that was once an illegal gambling den, there’s deep-rooted local history, which adds to its charm. The dim lighting, vintage decor, and chilled atmosphere make it a great spot for a date night, or dinner with friends. It’s sophisticated without being stuffy – the kind of place where you can enjoy great food and good wine without a fuss.
The Food
At Neighbourhood Wine, the menu is ever-evolving, reflecting the seasons and the chef’s creative inspirations. Expect European-inspired dishes that are both refined and comforting, perfect for sharing. You might start with something like the Hiramasa kingfish crudo, which comes with yuzu, cucumber, and horseradish, or dive into the rich, creamy house-made ricotta with confit lemon, honey, and smoked almonds. For something heartier, the Wagyu rib cap with oyster mushrooms and chimichurri is a standout, packed with flavour. And if you’re in the mood for something from the charcoal oven, options like the southern ranges skirt steak with lemon and mustard butter will definitely hit the spot.
The Drinks
As the name suggests, wine is the star of the show at Neighbourhood Wine. The wine list is extensive, with a strong focus on natural and minimal-intervention wines from small producers. It’s a treasure trove for wine lovers, with plenty of unique and interesting options to explore. The staff here are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what they pour, so if you need a recommendation, don’t hesitate to ask. If wine isn’t your thing, they also offer a small selection of craft beers and classic cocktails. But really, when in Rome… or Fitzroy, it’s all about the wine.

- Phone: (03) 9486 8306
- Hours: Sun-Thurs 12-11.30pm, Fri-Sat 12pm-12am
7. Bistro Sousou
- What we like: It really feels like you’ve time-warped straight to Europe.
- Take note: It can get noisy inside at peak times.
The Vibe
Bistro has an unmistakable French elegance. The bistro is beautifully designed with a blend of classic and contemporary touches – think soft lighting, rattan chairs, velvet booths, chandelier lights and general vintage flair. The customer service is generally good, but it can feel like you’re waiting a while for service on busier nights.
The Food
The menu at Bistro Sousou features French classics done with style and finesse. Standout options include the rich and buttery duck à l’orange, which is a perfect balance of sweet and savoury, and the steak tartare, which is as authentic as it gets. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, the grilled scallops and caviar hit the spot. It is a little on the pricey side (steaks start at $49), but the serving sizes are generous, so you shouldn’t leave hungry.
The Drinks
To complement the classic French fare, Bistro Sousou has a solid selection of wines, mostly focusing on French varietals. If wine isn’t your go-to, there’s also a selection of classic French cocktails. We’d suggest the Madame Sousou with fresh raspberry, blackcurrant liqueur and prosecco, or a French Negroni with bombay sapphire, pampelle, red vermouth and bitters.

8. Bar Liberty
- What we like: Super cosy & intimate, great spot for date-night. AMAZING cocktails.
- Take note: The venue is small, so definitely book ahead to nab a table!
The Vibe
Bar Liberty is the epitome of cool – effortlessly edgy, with a minimalist interior that focuses on clean lines, exposed brick, and moody lighting. With limited seating, you kind of feel like the only diner in there, making it the perfect spot for an intimate date-night or catch-up with friends. The staff are super friendly and down-to-earth, and very knowledgeable on the food and drink menu. It’s definitely a key factor that keeps us going back time and time again.
The Food
The menu at Bar Liberty is a constantly evolving lineup that draws inspiration from a mix of European and local influences. You might start with something light and fresh, like the Sydney Rock Oysters with wild fennel and tarragon, or snack on their fried cauliflower with nutmeg salt (this is super addictive – you might as well get two servings because we guarantee you’ll want to order more). For mains, you might have something like the pork & beef kabanosy skewer with brown sauce. Veggie eaters are covered too, with options like winter greens & gruyère pierogi, a tasty twist on a classic. The menu changes regularly, so there’s always something new to try.
The Drinks
Bar Liberty takes its drinks as seriously as its food, with a drinks list that’s both extensive and eclectic. The wine list is a highlight, featuring a well-curated selection of natural and minimal-intervention wines from all over the world (with many from Australia too). If you’re in the mood for something other than wine, their cocktail list is just as impressive, offering a mix of classic drinks and creative concoctions. Their martini hits every time, with Never Never gin, Milk & Honey vodka, kina & orange. And for beer drinkers, there’s a solid lineup of craft brews that pair perfectly with the bold flavours coming out of the kitchen.

9. Shop Ramen
- What we like: Quick service and comfort food at its best.
- Take note: This is a busy restaurant in Fitzroy with not a whole heap of seating.
The Vibe
Shop Ramen is a no-fuss ramen joint in Fitzroy. Service is pretty fast, which is always surprising considering how busy they always seem to be. But with limited seating and a small menu, it does make sense that food comes out quickly. There’s a big communal table in the centre, and some smaller tables dotted around the venue. There are also a few outside spots to grab (if the weather is playing nice). Staff are friendly and attentive, but don’t expect to be fussed over. It’s all about efficiency here!
The Food
At Shop Ramen, the menu is small but delicious. The star of the show, of course, is the ramen – big, steaming bowls of rich, flavourful broth, piled high with noodles and all the trimmings. Whether you go for the classic tonkotsu with its creamy, porky goodness, or the miso-based veggie option packed with fresh greens, you’re in for a good time. There’s a vegan option, but no gluten free noodles. There is, however, a tasty beef brisket rice bowl for gluten-free friends. The menu also features a selection of bao buns that are the perfect mix of soft and savoury, filled with options like crispy pork belly or spicy tofu. And if you have room for sides, don’t miss the house-made pickles or the addictive fried chicken that’s crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.
The Drinks
You’ll find a small but solid selection of Japanese beers like Asahi and Kirin, as well as some yuzu, sake and umeshu. There’s a small selection of wine by the glass too. For something non-boozy, there’s house-made lemonade, or canned green tea.

10. Bon Ap’ Petit Bistro
- What we like: Amazing quality French food, and for great value.
- Take note: Service can feel rushed sometimes.
Vibe
Fitzroy does its French food well, and Bon Ap’ Petit Bistro is one of the best restaurants in Fitzroy for a French-style lunch or dinner. The decor is understated but thoughtful, with warm wood tones, vintage French posters, and just the right amount of soft lighting to create a relaxed vibe. The space is intimate and snug, with tables close enough to hear your neighbour’s conversations. Service can feel rushed sometimes, and some of the staff feel unapproachable, but overall, the customer service here is solid.
The Food
Bon Ap’ Petit Bistro brings the the best of French comfort food to your table; like a flaky croissant au fromage and croque monsieur, or one of their baguettes like the Sandwich Provençal with roasted capsicum and goat cheese. Dinner time is equally exciting, with options like Moules Normande – mussels in a creamy cider sauce with a side of crispy frites, and the classic Boeuf Bourguignon, slow-cooked to perfection. And if you’ve got a sweet tooth, the Crème Brûlée is a must-try – it’s famous for a reason, with that perfect crack of caramel on top.
The Drinks
Their wine list is packed with French gems, perfect for pairing with whatever’s on your plate. Whether you’re into a crisp white, a bold red, or a bubbly Champagne, there’s something here to suit your taste. The French Negroni or refreshing Elderflower Fizz are also solid choices.
