1. Pidapipo

  • Address: 8 Degraves St, Melbourne VIC 3000
  • Hours: Mon-Sun 12pm – 11pm
  • Contact: [email protected]

Did someone say gelato cake? If you’re in Melbourne and looking to treat yourself or celebrate a special occasion, Pidapipo’s decadent gelato cakes are a must-try. They bring that traditional Italian dessert magic but with a twist that feels new and exciting.

I’ve had the chance to try out several of Pidapipo’s gelato cakes, and they’re as tasty as they are inventive. The Banoffee Pie ($58) was a personal favourite; its mix of banana cake and vanilla bean gelato, all topped with cream and crunchy peanuts is just the right blend of familiar and fancy.

Then there’s the Tiramisu Alla Pidapipo ($90), a fresh take on the classic Italian dessert. They use house-made savoiardi biscuits, soak them in espresso and sherry, and layer it with mascarpone Stracciatella gelato. It’s creamy, dreamy, and dusted with cocoa on top, making it a hit at any dinner table.

Made from scratch, on-site, in small batches only, owner Lisa Valmorbida has learned from the best gelaterias in Italy, and you can taste the difference. Their flagship store in the city is also a lab for gelato flavour experimentation, and you can grab some Pidapipo merch in the retail store at the front. You’ll also find Pidapipo in Fitzroy and Carlton.

2. Sucre du Jour

  • Address: Shop 10 436/434 Burke Road 434, State Route 17, Camberwell VIC 3124
  • Hours: Tue-Sat 8am-5pm, Sun 10am-5pm
  • Phone: 0403 448 906

Sucre du Jour Camberwell is a seriously cool patisserie and cake shop that blends French tradition with Japanese and Malaysian influence. Its creative owners, Eigen Ting and Josephine Tan both have an impressive background in high-end dining and bring a unique touch to their creations, making this spot a serious local gem.

Sucre du Jour has a playful yet refined approach to their menu, which features a variety of cakes and pastries that are both innovative and deeply rooted in quality. The menu includes items like a croissant filled with Bakkwa (sweet and sticky candied pork jerky) and pork floss, and unique sweets like the “Love U So Matcha,” which combines matcha, white chocolate mousse, and passion fruit curd with a crunchy, puffed rice base.

In terms of cakes, Sucre du Jour offers an exquisite range perfect for various occasions. I’d recommend the “Pear-Fection,” with vanilla sponge and hazelnut crunch, and the “Black Sesame & Chocolate Mille Feuille,” with its caramelised puff pastry and black sesame praline.

Word on the street is the “Mango Shortcake XL,” with mango oolong mousse, and the “Sakura XL,” a blend of cherry blossom mousse and strawberry compote, are crowd-favourites. Sucre Du Jour’s cakes aren’t just designed for taste, but act as beautiful centrepieces for any celebration (and are totally insta-worthy).

3. LeTAO

  • Address: 238 Swanston St, Melbourne VIC 3000
  • Hours: Mon-Fri & Sun 12-10pm, Sat 12pm-1:30am
  • Phone: 0404 761 888

If you’re a cheesecake lover, LeTAO is a must-try. A renowned Japanese cheesecake brand, LeTAO is best known for its Double Fromage cheesecake, which combines the creaminess of Hokkaido dairy (known for being the best in the world) with the richness of Italian mascarpone and Australian cream cheese to create a dessert that many customers have called “life-changing”. The cheesecake features a no-bake, crumbly topping that simply melts in your mouth, offering a unique texture contrast to the silky base.

Originally a staple in Hokkaido, Japan, they established a presence in Melbourne in 2022, and the store has gone gang-busters since. You’ll often find queues on the weekend as people fight to get a taste of their cheesecakes. If you’re after something a little out of the ordinary, LeTAO also offers desserts like the Snow Cake—a mousse cheesecake—and seasonal specials that showcase the best of Japanese dessert craftsmanship.

4. Kudo

  • Address: The Hotel Windsor, 8 Little Collins St, Melbourne VIC 3000
  • Hours: Wed-Sun 9am-2:30pm
  • Contact: [email protected]

Gluten-free fam – listen up. If you’re yet to visit Kudo’s bakery in Melbourne (inside Hotel Windsor) oh man, you’re missing out. Kudo’s bakery is known for its gluten-free baked goodies, featuring a daily-changing menu that includes creative cakes, pastries, and bread, all lovingly made sans gluten.

Husband and wife chef duo Felix Goodwin & Elena Nguyen use only local flour, indigenous grains, and other native ingredients, adding a unique twist to classic treats, such as their version of a Taiwanese pineapple cookie or a rye-style miche loaf enhanced with wattleseed and miso.

They’re particularly known for their chiffon cakes, like their Mango Macadamia Chiffon Cake, inspired by the iconic Weis bar. Featuring a mango-infused sponge, sweetened with a syrup made from the whole mango, plus luxurious layers of coconut-macadamia cream and homemade mango curd nestled within. It’s the perfect blend of creamy and crunchy and of course – gluten-free!

5. Millé and B Patisserie

  • Address: Shop 3, Level 3/28 Bouverie St, Carlton VIC 3053
  • Hours: Tue-Sun 10am-4pm
  • Phone: 0437 826 731

What could possibly be better than crepes and cakes? Combining them, of course! At Millé and B in Carlton, each cake is constructed with twenty layers of delicate thin crepes, and each layer is filled with its own unique and delicious filling.

If you have to try just one, I’d opt for the Yuzu & White Chocolate crepe cake ($79). Made with 100% Japanese yuzu juice and couverture Belgium white chocolate, then topped with chopped pistachios and yuzu almond dacquoise – you will simply never want to eat another cake that isn’t made from crepes.

They also bake plenty of other cakes and shortbreads (like Lychee & Longan Japanese Shortcake), and on Saturdays, you can grab yourself some Shokupan (Japanese milk bread, also called Hokkaido milk bread).

6. Le Petit Gateau

  • Address: 458 Little Collins St, Melbourne VIC 3000
  • Hours: Mon-Fri 8am-3pm
  • Phone: (03) 9944 8893

Walking into the patisserie, it’s clear why Let Petit Gateau is such a local favourite. The first thing you notice is the elegant display of cakes and sweet treats, all neatly arranged under glass like little artworks. It’s hard to know which one to try! However, I tried the Brownie Passionfruit Chocolate Gateau, and it was unreal —crunchy from the hazelnut praline, tangy from the passionfruit custard, and rich from the chocolate mousse. Another standout is the Hazelnut Mille Feuille, which is decadently layered with chocolate ganache and Chantilly cream (it’s as decadent and luxurious as it sounds).

What’s really impressive about Le Petit Gateau is that everything is made on-site by award-winning chefs who clearly love what they do. Whether it’s a special occasion or you’re just in the mood to treat yourself, their cakes are perfect for a bit of everyday luxury.

7. Miss Trixie Drinks Tea

Miss Trixie Drinks Tea is perhaps one of the most famous cake shops in Melbourne – and it doesn’t even have a shop front. Miss Trixie Drinks Tea was created by visionary Alice Bennett who started a blog as a way to show her family and friends her weekend baking creations.

Soon enough her family and friends were drooling over her creations, so Alice started to box them up and deliver them. Alice has a serious knack for making cakes that not only taste fantastic but are also visually stunning to look at (and often sprinkled with a bit of humour).

Her cakes aren’t cheap – they start from about $100 (and that’s not even for a custom cake). However, when you consider how much love, creativity and talent goes into her cakes, you’ll be happy to pay the price. Alice pours her heart and soul into the cakes, baked goods, desserts and sugary treats she makes. Plus, all of her creations are homemade using only the finest ingredients (no home-brand chocolate here, thank you very much!)

So, if you’re looking for a funky, fun and vibrant cake for whatever occasion, I’d highly recommend checking out Miss Trixie Drinks Tea.

8. Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop

  • Address: 151 Union Rd, Ascot Vale VIC 3032
  • Hours: Mon-Fri 9am-3pm, Sat 8am-2pm
  • Phone: 0404 191 130

Some dessert lovers might see terms like “vegan” or “allergy-friendly” and run for the hills, but they’d be missing out on one of the best Melbourne cake shops – Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop in Ascot Vale. From their custom birthday cakes to their decadent cinnamon buns to anything in between, Mister Nice Guys delivers textures and flavours so satisfying that eggs, gluten and dairy will start to seem downright superfluous.

The names of the cakes are just as inventive as the cakes themselves – think “Holy Biscoff,” “Unicorn Milkshake,” and “Bangarang,”. It’s clear creativity is at the core of their baking ethos. I’d recommend the Holy Biscoff – a fusion of Biscoff cookie cake with caramel and white chocolate drip, topped with a Biscoff cookie. The Unicorn Milkshake sounds unreal too – a sprinkle cake with vanilla frosting – a nod to the playful and magical.

How Man of Many Chose the Best Cake Shops in Melbourne

Choosing the best cakes in Melbourne is easy, who wouldn’t want to dedicate extensive research to the world of sweet treats? With that being said, Man of Many has taken into account a few factors when putting together our list. These include flavour first and foremost, but also the design of the cake, the range of cakes on offer from the shop, and the authenticity of the cakes themselves. The price point is a consideration, but we also realise authentic patisserie requires generational talent, so we’re not going out of our way to exclude the expensive cakes in Melbourne.
