With over 400 wines sourced from across the globe and a delectable Mediterranean-inspired menu, Coogee Wine Room has your next date night sorted. The intimate charm of European wine bars has come to Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, providing a wine hub for locals and a desirable destination for others. The wine list includes the flagship varietals that Aussies know and love. With over 50 styles in total, there’s bound to be discoveries with each visit.
Accompanying the wines is a collection of smaller, though substantial dishes from a Mediterranean-inspired seasonal menu. However, the food will always champion dishes that pair with wine. The menu includes a selection of cheese and charcuterie as well as small and large sharing plates.
Sydney rock oysters, pork sliders, Greek-inspired char-grilled octopus with lentils, an 800g steak with rocket and Reggiano and a chocolate board featuring selections from the Barossa and Margaret River are highlights from Coogee Wine Room’s current menu.
The wine room itself is designed as a casual space, split over two floors. The existing industrial elements, including exposed brick walls and concrete floors, are kept intact as a reference to rustic cellar doors. The introduction of warm timbers, rich leather and marble merge classic with contemporary. The green timber cladding on the counters of the bar and kitchen aims to capture the green hues of the waters off Coogee Beach.
The front bar is the natural place to perch for a casual afternoon drink and snack otherwise head further in and nab one of the dining tables for a lingering late lunch. Upstairs is more cosy, with a deep-seated, wraparound banquette lounge while the adjoining Dining Room offers a more intimate space for wining and dining.
Coogee Wine Room is owned by locals, Tom Hardwick and Michelle Morales. Their concept has been developing for over ten years, inspired by visits to great wine regions and wineries of the world.
“We’ve worked hard to create a balanced list that showcases the best examples of wine varietals that are synonymous with the great wine regions of the world,” says Tom Hardwick.
“There are a lot of smaller, boutique producers on the list, but at the end of the day, we love great wine, no matter who produces it.”
The Coogee Wine Room is now open at 222 Coogee Bay Road, Coogee, Monday to Wednesday from 3pm until late and Thursday to Sunday, 12pm ‘til late. Bookings are accepted, but there will always be seats reserved for walk-ins. Also, the upstairs space is available for private bookings of up to 60 guests.
