DARK LARK

Nick Hall – Editor-in-Chief

In my years at Man of Many, I’ve slowly wading my way through a sea of whisky – some good, some less so, but I’ve always been able to trust Lark Distilling Co. for a top drop. The Tasmanian whisky icon helmed by the Godfather of Aussie drams himself, Bill Lark, has produced vintage after vintage of outrageously delicious bottles that warm the soul and steel the nerves. This week, I got the incredible opportunity to test-drive the House of Lark’s latest edition, which was inspired by another Tasmanian icon, Dark Mofo. It was a serious wild event.

Huddled around a small fire in a hollowed-out warehouse, I found myself seemingly transported back to Tasmania and the icy climate of the southern port. Placed in the centre of the otherwise empty room was a table setting that housed a bespoke art installation that represented the liquid gold pouring from copper still tube, which spilled across the table before sinking to the distillery depths below ground. It was a visual feast for the eyes, but it paled in comparison to the actual feast that would follow.

Hobart-based chef Jamie Yates curated a menu using tasting notes from the DARK LARK that included charcoal-grilled wallaby, with browned saltbush butter, and Cacio e Pepe risotto, with Tasmanian pyengana cheddar & native pepperberry. But the star of the show was DARK LARK, the stunning all-black ode to Tasmania in a bottle. Perhaps it was cold, or simply the environment I was in, but I’ve never come across an Australian whisky with such an easy-drinking finish. A little lighter than most Lark releases at 41.9%ABV, DARK LARK has an immediate rich cocoa note complemented by dried figs and orange zest, but from there, it gets more complex. I was picking up things like stone fruit and banana, while other flavours like dark mocha and sugar were added into the mix.

I genuinely loved the experience of drinking this one and can definitely see myself picking up a sleek, all-black bottle of my own. A limited release, DARK LARK is available now, exclusively from Lark Distillery.

Rhinoshield x pewdiepie phone case

RhinoShield X Pewdiepie Phone Case

Scott Purcell – Co-Founder

I’ve recently switched over from my Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 to the new Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra which means it’s time for a new phonecase. For long readers of my staff favourites, it’s no secret that I’m a big Pewdiepie fan. So it only made sense that I protect my phone with one of his cases. The thing I love about it? It’s completely unique to most others you see out which makes your phone easily identifiable and RhinoShield as a brand is just plain quality. This SolidSuit case in matte black finish comes without annoying fingerprints and improves shock resistance. Minimal yet aesthetically pleasing. Thumbs up to that.

Siegfred & Joy – Berlin’s Worst Street Magicians

My Staff Favourite for the week is Siegfred & Joy—two of Berlin’s worst—but most entertaining magicians. Their Instagram page documents the adventures of two friends performing their own unique brand of street magic for unsuspecting strangers.

There are not many tricks to be found up the sleeves of this duo as they wander the streets and subways in their shiny suits, performing poorly executed variations of essentially the same trick. While each video is full of awkward moments, candid reactions and dry humour, there’s an endearing quality about these two buddies that make their uncomfortable performances thoroughly entertaining.

CitySurf with Under Armour

Tim Fernandes – Senior Sales & Partnerships Manager

After two years of virtual events, the world’s biggest fun run, City2Surf, is back in full swing. I’m currently in training to run the Sydney to Bondi 14km stretch alongside 85,000 others, which will be happening August 14. I’ll be wearing UA kicks as they’re the comfiest and most reliable running shoe brand around, but because I’m a little unfit at present I’ll also be participating in their training program. Under Armour has partnered with founders of the Bondi Beach-based run club The 440, to deliver the official “rebel City2Surf Training Program powered by Under Armour”. The online training programs are available for runners of every level with tips around race prep, nutrition and running techniques. In the spirit of supporting and growing the running culture, all participants who have registered for City2Surf are welcome to join the “UA rebel 440” run team. Those who sign up for the team, before June 30, will also receive a free custom UA x 440 run crew t-shirt to run the course.

Folli Growth Activator Spray

Sam Mangioni – Journalist – Entertainment & Culture

I remember the days when my hair was thicker than a bowl of oatmeal. In fact, it was once so luscious that a hairdresser even told me, “Wow, you will never lose your hair”. Well, as I enter my third decade on the planet, I can say unequivocally that my wig is starting to retreat and that hairdresser was just gassing me up for tips. Damn you, Just Cuts! Desperate to preserve my fleeting youth, I ordered some Folli – Growth Activator Spray. Sceptical at first, I’ve been applying the product as required and have definitely noticed an improvement around my widow’s peak area. Botanically based, the spray is packed full of the nutrients you need to stimulate growth and produce longer, stronger hair that is less prone to breakage. If you’re looking for a simple routine to fight back against impending baldness and a life of hat-wearing, definitely check out their range of products.

The Good Doctor

Clelia Niyikiza – Branded Content Assistant

The good doctor is a show I’ve finished and recommend for those looking to add something else to watch this cold season. The show is about a surgeon with autism and the challenges/Success he faces. The first few episodes of the current season also highlights a part of the pandemic and the great work health care workers did for society while also showing some experiences they went through in detail. There’s a reason it’s currently trending at #2 on Netflix in Australia.
