BMW Concept i4 Goes Electrifies Driving Pleasure

BMW is unleashing a pure-electric Gran Coupe on the world, the BMW Concept i4, which is slated to go into production in 2021. “The BMW Concept i4 brings electrification to the core of the BMW brand. The design is dynamic, clean, and elegant. In short: a perfect BMW that happens to be zero-emission,” stated Adrian van Hooydonk, the senior vice president of BMW Group Design.

BMW is looking to the future with this new design, and they’re planning on that future having plenty of performance. The electric drivetrain for the i4 offers 530 horsepower, with a 0 to 60 mile per hour acceleration of approximately 4.0 seconds. The i4 will top out at 124 miles per hour, and will have a range of up to 600 km. All that power is built around driver experience, as is the car’s design. Domagoj Dukec, head of BMW Design, explains, “The design of the BMW Concept i4 shows fantastic proportions, a powerfully expressive character and, of course, a lot of attention to detail. With the BMW Curved Display, we have redefined BMW’s signature driver focus in an extremely elegant way. At the same time, the BMW Concept i4 transports a feeling of sustainable driving pleasure.”

The i4 has a wider, longer design that evokes confidence. The four-door coupe has a fastback roofline and short overhangs that complement the smooth lines. Done in frozen light copper, the car has an interplay of surfaces that attracts the eye. But it’s not all looks—many of the design features serve a purpose, such as the side skirts that conceal the battery technology, or the diffuser elements in the rear end that are used to enhance aerodynamic efficiency. The wheel rims have also been redesigned to be lightweight and to further improve the aerodynamics of the car. Inside, the i4 focuses on the driver, putting everything that is needed to enjoy the driving experience right there. The car also offers three different Experience Modes—Core, Sport, and Efficient—to further enhance the pleasure of driving the i4. This foray into the world of electrification for BMW moves into the future without sacrificing the tradition of comfort and driving pleasure.
