Auto Fabrica Rethinks BMW R NineT Scrambler Customization

The Wheels and Waves festival in Biarritz, France, will be awash in motorcycles, but Auto Fabrica just might attract the most attention with their Type 18 BMW R NineT Scrambler custom motorcycle. While most customizers are looking to the future, offering examples that take on characteristics of what might be rather than what was, Auto Fabrica’s brothers Bujar and Gazmend Muharremi went to the past for their inspiration. What they found was the BMW museum in Munich, where they were transfixed by the older models of the 20th century as well as BMW’s history of creating aircraft engines. That influence led the brothers to incorporate geometric architecture and aircraft design—especially that of the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor—into their concept.

This isn’t a retromod, however. The curved lines were influenced by the designs of the past, but there is still a modern and perhaps even futuristic feel to the bike. It’s a nice balance of the past and the future. The brothers spent over a year on the bike, personally designing, fabricating, and now manufacturing the conversions. They handcrafted the aluminum bodywork as well as the exhaust pipes, which were cut from stainless steel. The headlight brackets are 3D printed. The forks of a BMW S 1000 RR were recruited for the bike, while the handlebars come courtesy of Renthal. The lever and belt cover were grafted in from a 719. The rear shock absorber is from Maxton Engineer, but the bench was custom-made in house.
The build required a mixing of modern and traditional techniques. Along with the handcrafted aluminum panels, the brothers made use of 3D printing technology to get the look right. Fortunately the BMW R NineT is the perfect platform for customization, providing a quality canvas from which the artists can work. The blending of past and future in Auto Fabrica’s Type 18 just goes to show how capable the BMW R NineT is when it comes to making a vision of what could be a reality.
