Yamaha’s New EMF Scooter is an All-Electric Commuter with a Swappable Battery

Yamaha is at it again, partnering up with Gogoro Inc. for its second electric scooter. But where the EC-05, launched in 2019, was an OEM model that not only borrowed from but was built on a Gogoro production vehicle, this time around Yamaha used their local subsidiary Yamaha Motor R&D Taiwan Co., Ltd., to produce and market their own chassis. The new model also has more acceleration than you expect, and it rides onto the scene on small-diameter wheels. But what may attract more attention than anything else is the battery swapping capability of this scooter.

“Gogoro is excited to be supporting Yamaha’s growing portfolio of Gogoro-powered vehicles and we look forward to their new Taiwan customers using Gogoro’s battery swapping,” explains Horace Luke, the founder and CEO of Gogoro Inc. “Yamaha and Gogoro remain committed to bringing better and more sustainable transportation solutions to market that integrate Yamaha’s incredible vehicle design and engineering together with Gogoro’s leading battery swapping.”

Yamaha mirrors the sentiment, especially in light of their Environmental Plan 2050, which calls for complete carbon neutrality across all of its business activities. It’s easy to see how the futuristic, angular design of the EMF fits into that plan, thanks in large part to the access that they will now have to the 10,000 battery-swapping stations in over 2,200 locations comprised in the Gogoro system.

In addition to the battery swapping feature, the EMF comes with a stacked LED headlight and a large TFT display where you can get turn-by-turn navigation along with your system information. Pair your smartphone with the scooter and you can use it to turn the scooter on and off remotely. No word on range yet, but the Taiwan market has plenty of stations—just ask the estimated 450,000 riders doing 330,000 daily battery swaps throughout the country.
