Jaguar took the covers off its futuristic “Type 00” concept car at Miami Art Week in late 2024, and the internet reacted accordingly. The advertising campaign was heavily scrutinised, and the car’s design sparked fierce debate across social media. Now, the British automaker is officially entering its next phase, pulling back the curtain on the Jaguar Type 01 interior and confirming its official production timeline.

This new luxury four-door GT EV will be built in the UK using the brand’s bespoke Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA). Today, Jaguar unveiled the production-intent cabin layout—featuring a dramatic central spine and travertine stone finishes—and confirmed that the production-ready Type 01 will make its global debut in New York on 6 October 2026. Before the NYC reveal, a camouflaged prototype that recently completed dynamic runs at the Goodwood Festival of Speed will make its official North American debut at the 75th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on 16 August 2026.

Signalling a wave goodbye to Jaguar’s traditional buyer base, the Type 01 makes room for a younger, wealthier demographic seeking an electric alternative to a Rolls-Royce Spectre or Bentley Continental GT. With a targeted range of up to 770km (478 miles) and ultra-fast charging capable of adding 321km in 15 minutes, it arrives as one of the most technically capable EVs ever conceived. Here is everything we know about the Jaguar Type 01.

Jaguar’s Formula E Engineers Touched the Type 01

Speed and heritage are, apparently, back in fashion at Jaguar. Nearly two years after a controversial rebrand that drew criticism for omitting cars from its launch materials, the brand’s refocusing on high-performance dynamics. To pivot the narrative back to real-world performance, Jaguar is heavily leveraging its Formula E outfit, Jaguar TCS Racing. Team Principal, Ian James, notes that driving dynamics remain paramount to the Jaguar ethos.

Speaking to Stephen Ottley of News Corp, James revealed that when he initially joined JLR, “there was a real reluctance to talk about the heritage of Jaguar and lean into that.”

“The reset button was very firmly pushed, rightly or wrongly. What it did do is, I think, it made everybody sit up and take notice. Since then, I think internally it’s fair to say that there’s been a reflection.”

James, who openly admits he is “not an EV evangelist,” believes that the core of the brand relies on physical driving engagement. “What makes a Jaguar? … One of the key things is the driving dynamics of the car. And that for me is an absolute solid link between what we’re doing on the motorsport program and what we’re doing on the road car program,” he explained in the story.

Because software dictates the performance and efficiency of both electric race cars and modern connected road cars, Jaguar’s Formula E engineers have been directly integrated into the Type 01’s road car development. Developments learned on the track will be deployed to the production Type 01 via over-the-air software updates. “We’re not constrained in motorsport in the same way that road car development is,” James said, “so it means that we can fail faster, hopefully develop faster, come up with new ideas, new technologies, and then bring that into the road car development as well.”

Where Does the Name “Type 01” Come From?

The “Type 01” name references legendary predecessors. The “Type” naming first appeared on the Le Mans race-winning C-type of 1951, and on the road, it came to represent an engaging drive with deep reserves of power, plus refinement and composure. The E-type and F-TYPE are exemplars of this lineage. However, for this new generation, the numbers have a very specific meaning:

  • The ‘0’: Represents electric propulsion and zero tailpipe emissions.
  • The ‘1’: Denotes its status as the first Jaguar of a new era.

Managing Director Rawdon Glover says the zero signifies a complete brand reset, while the ‘1’ marks their first car for a new chapter as a one-of-a-kind. “We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before,” said Glover. “Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance. The Type 01 name is part of that story – for me, the zero also signifies a complete brand reset, and the ‘1’, our first car for a new chapter, a ‘one of a kind!’”

To complete the visual identity, the Type 01 name appears on a bold linear strikethrough motif where the long bonnet meets the windscreen.

Inside the Jaguar Type 01 Interior

Jaguar officially pulled back the curtain on the Type 01 interior, revealing a cabin built around an architectural “Exuberant Modernism” theme.

Similar to the recently unveiled Range Rover GT, the conventional horizontal dashboard layout has been thrown out in favour of a Type 01, which introduces a dramatic longitudinal central spine running the entire length of the cabin. This structural element divides the interior into four distinct, individual passenger spaces. The low GT seating position is engineered to wrap around the driver, delivering a cossetting, confidence-inspiring driving environment.

The interior finish draws inspiration from travertine stone and artisan textiles. Brass-inspired trim accents run along the central spine and top door rails, bearing the signature Jaguar leaper logo. Tech integration favours a “technology on demand” philosophy, concealing digital interfaces until needed.

To keep the cabin streamlined and driver-focused, a digital ClearSight Rear View Display is positioned centrally at the base of the windscreen, sitting at the exact eye level of the side mirrors to minimise driver distraction. This design extends across the interior, where linear strikethrough elements visually sweep the long exterior bonnet line directly into a slim dashboard. Completing the minimalist aesthetic, concealed storage compartments and pop-up control modules keep all technology hidden until needed, ensuring the cabin remains uncluttered.

“Our holistic design philosophy translates the vehicle’s exterior presence into a distinctive interior architecture,” said Thomas Holden, Chief Interior Designer, Jaguar. “In contrast to the horizontal interior design norm, we emphasise its dramatic longitudinal nature through the central spine – an architectural statement that creates four individual spaces. With authentic materials, technology on demand and reductive flowing surfaces, Type 01 presents unmistakable drama and theatre that will define the modern luxury automotive interior of the future.”

Why Does it Look Like a Concept Car?

While the original Type 00 was a pure design study, production-intent Type 01 prototypes are actively being tested globally. Clad in custom camouflage wraps, the prototype recently made its dynamic track debut at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Despite its quiet electric powertrain, its handling capabilities on the 1.16-mile Hillclimb proved it has the dynamic chops to match its aggressive styling.

Prototypes have also been spotted during winter testing and testing on the streets of Paris, London, and ahead of the Monaco E-Prix. Until the camouflage is removed, we shouldn’t look too deeply into the exterior surface details, as elements will adapt to comply with strict pedestrian safety regulations worldwide. However, key proportions will carry over, including the extremely long bonnet, sweeping roofline, 23-inch alloy wheels, fastback profile, and a boat tail reminiscent of bespoke coachbuilt vehicles.

Like the Polestar 4, the Jaguar Type 01 uses a glassless tailgate, with a camera mirror system replacing the traditional rear-view mirror. This is joined at the rear by Horizontal Strikethrough graphics, which serve as a primary visual anchor for the brand’s “Exuberant Modernism” creative philosophy.

It shares much of its structural ethos with the Cadillac Celestiq, an all-electric four-door sedan built on bespoke EV architecture priced at USD$340,000. While Cadillac reached market first, sales remain under 25 units, giving Jaguar an opportunity to capture higher production volumes.

It shares much of its DNA with the often-forgotten Cadillac Celestiq, an all-electric four-door sedan built on bespoke EV architecture that you can buy right now for USD$340,000. It seems Cadillac has already beaten Jaguar at its own game, but they’ve reportedly sold fewer than 25 of those vehicles.

Perhaps the biggest news surrounding the Type 01 earlier this year was the departure of the man who penned its design. Professor Gerry McGovern OBE officially stepped down as Chief Creative Officer and as a member of the JLR board at the end of March 2026 to establish his own creative consultancy. With two decades at the brand, McGovern elevated Land Rover and Range Rover to new heights of luxury with models like the Evoque, Velar, and the modern Defender. However, his reductionist philosophy and bold vision for Jaguar’s reinvention culminated in the divisive Type 00 concept unveiled in late 2024.

The Type 01 continues to be loathed by many traditionalists, but McGovern successfully achieved what he set out to do: get the world talking about Jaguar for the first time in almost 60 years. JLR CEO PB Balaji noted, McGovern’s “Vision, drive and passion have left an indelible stamp on our brands,” so it’s disappointing to hear that he won’t be around to see his vision come to life.

What’s Going to Power the Jaguar Type 01?

Underpinning the Type 01 is the dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA). Engineered for high-performance luxury applications, the flagship launch variant utilises a tri-motor electric powertrain:

  • Total Power Output: Exceeds 1,000 PS (>986 hp).
  • Peak Torque: Over 1,300 Nm (958 lb-ft) delivered instantly across all four wheels.
  • Target WLTP Range: Up to 770 km (478 miles).
  • Target EPA Range: 430 miles (692 km).
  • Ultra-Fast Charging: Adds 321 km (200 miles) of range in 15 minutes via 800V DC fast-charging.

This performance allows the Type 01 to hit 0-60 mph in the low 3.0-second range and reach a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

What Does the Future of Jaguar Look Like?

The Jaguar Type 01 is a starting point for things to come at the brand, now that it’s stopped selling vehicles in Australia. We don’t know which vehicles will follow next, or what the production vehicle will look like, but we do know that whatever follows will likely use similar design cues and be based on the new Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA).

When it does make production, the Jaguar Type 01 will be sold in “a select number of exclusive brand stores,” the first of which will be located in the luxury fashion district of Paris, in the 8th arrondissement.

“The magic of Jaguar is close to my heart – an original British luxury brand unmatched in its heritage, artistry and emotional magnetism,” said Adrian Mardell, the former Chief Executive Officer of JLR, when the Type 00 concept was announced. “That’s the Jaguar we are recapturing, and we will create the same sense of awe that surrounded iconic models like the E-type. Our journey is already underway, guided by our original ethos to Copy Nothing – and the results will be spectacular.”

Jaguar hasn’t listed a price for the Jaguar Type 01, but reports suggest it will be above £100,000 (approximately AUD $195,000) when it arrives. We think it will be much, much more than that.
