Apple iPhone 14 Australia: Release Date, Price, Features Revealed

Apple revealed the long-anticipated iPhone 14 at its September event, giving fans a first look at the world-leading smartphone’s redesigned UX, new features and enhanced connectivity before its release on the 16th of September 2022. Not content with simply dropping the new iPhone, Apple also plugged brand new variations of its Apple Watch and AirPod offerings.

Underpinning all of the new announcements and devices was a renewed commitment to innovation and technological endeavour, with Apple’s A16 chip taking its rightful place on top of the performance mountain. But despite all the hype and interest surrounding the much-anticipated event, onlookers couldn’t help but think this announcement was a little underwhelming.

Apple iPhone 14 Announcement

Held at the tech giant’s Cupertino, California headquarters, Apple’s hardware showcase marked the first in-person launch since 2019. For the past two years, the world’s most valuable company has been forced to use pre-recorded videos to announce its new product lineups, which included the reveal of the Apple iPhone 13 last September. This time around, the brand took to YouTube and its website to stream the multi-disciplinary event that went under the tagline ‘Far Out’, and suffice to say, Apple shot for the stars.

Four New Models Added to the iPhone Lineup

Four new models are joining the lineup – the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

“Our customers count on their iPhone every day, and with iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, we’re delivering more advancements than any other iPhone. iPhone 14 Pro introduces a camera system that empowers every user — from the casual user to the professional — to take their best photos and video, and innovative new technologies like the Always-On display and the Dynamic Island, which offer new interactions for notifications and activities,” said Joswiak.

“Groundbreaking safety capabilities bring users even more security, offering help when they need it most. And with the incredibly powerful and efficient A16 Bionic chip and all-day battery life, this is the best iPhone yet.”

Representing the ‘most advanced’ lineup ever released, the iPhone 14 takes things up a notch, pun very much intended. The Pro and Pro Max cop a new animated notch, which Apple refers to as the ‘Dynamic Island’. This section, found at the top of the device is set to blur the line between hardware and software, displaying important alerts, notifications, and activities in real-time, without impeding content on the screen.

The iPhone Mini Culled from the Lineup

For months, tech fans have been speculating the much-loved brand would drop the latest iteration of its hit smartphone, however, secrets regarding the iPhone 14 have been well held. The initial thoughts were that several models of the smartphone would be unveiled, with last year’s iPhone Mini expected to be culled from the lineup. Taking to the stage on September 7, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak finally put the rumours to bed, revealing that the Mini is gone.

iPhone 14 Design and Display

Taking a look at the new lineup, there isn’t a lot of difference in design from previous models, but there are a few heightened features. Specifically,  the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feature surgical-grade stainless steel and textured matte glass design, with variations available in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes.

Importantly, both models include a new Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion which Apple revealed featured the Always-On display for the first time ever on iPhone, courtesy of the new 1Hz refresh rate.

Apple also went on to reveal that the Pro lineup is receiving a new Lock Screen, along with advanced display options that improve visibility and ease of use. The tech giant has bumped up the peak HDR brightness level to Pro Display XDR, and the highest outdoor peak brightness in a smartphone: up to 2000 nits, or twice as bright as iPhone 13 Pro. There is also a Ceramic Shield front cover which Apple has added to reduce the risk of cracks and blemishes.

On the more affordable end of the spectrum, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are available in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes, made from sleek aerospace-grade aluminium design in five finishes. Apple revealed that both models have an updated internal design for better thermal performance, Super Retina XDR displays with OLED technology that supports 1200 nits of peak HDR brightness, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and Dolby Vision.

iPhone 14 Camera

For many iPhone fans, the major drawcard remains the ultra-high-performance camera. Where Apple improved the setup with last year’s iPhone 13, rejigging the rear camera layout to include diagonally arranged lenses, the company has gone one better in 2022. The new iPhone 14 has once again smoothed out the major kinks and redesigned the layout of the camera, culminating in what Apple claims is its ‘most advanced dual-camera system’.

The major benefit for iPhone 14 Pro users is the upgrade in computational photography, courtesy of the new Photonic Engine feature. according to Apple, the addition offers a “giant leap for mid- to low-light performance in photos across all cameras” through deep integration of hardware and software. By applying Deep Fusion earlier in the imaging process, Apple says the feature can weed out imperfections allowing users to capture more intense detail while preserving textures and colours. In terms of the actual camera itself, however, Apple has gone with the ‘bigger means better’ mentality, dropping a whopping 48MP main camera into the new device, complete with a quad-pixel sensor that features second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilisation.

“For most photos, the quad-pixel sensor combines every four pixels into one large quad pixel equivalent to 2.44 µm, resulting in amazing low-light capture and keeping photo size at a practical 12MP. The quad-pixel sensor also enables a 2x Telephoto option that uses the middle 12 megapixels of the sensor for full-resolution photos and 4K videos with no digital zoom,” Apple said. “This delivers optical quality at a familiar focal length, which is great for features like Portrait mode. The quad-pixel sensor also brings benefits to pro workflows, optimizing for detail in ProRAW. And with a new machine learning model designed specifically for the quad-pixel sensor, iPhone now shoots ProRAW at 48MP with an unprecedented level of detail, enabling new creative workflows for pro users.”

For the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, the cameras also copped a slight upgrade, with a new 12MP Main camera featuring a larger sensor and larger pixels, a new front TrueDepth camera, the Ultra Wide camera to capture more of a scene and Photonic Engine for a giant leap in low-light performance. Apple also added a few new camera features to the iPhone 14 Pro lineup, aiming to give users a more complete photographic experience. Here are the extra elements Apple announced overnight:

  • 12MP Ultra Wide camera with 1.4 µm pixels
  • Telephoto camera that offers 3x optical zoom.
  • Front TrueDepth camera with an ƒ/1.9 aperture
  • Adaptive True Tone flash
  • Action mode
  • Cinematic mode
  • Pro-level workflows for video, including ProRes3 and end-to-end Dolby Vision HDR

Performance

While it’s certainly not the sexiest of announcements, the biggest update to the iPhone lineup might come on the inside, with Apple confirming the new iPhone Pro and Pro Max lineup will receive the new A16 Bionic Chip. The most powerful chip in Apple’s stable, the new addition houses two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores, delivering a performance that the tech company claims is up to 40 per cent faster than the competition. There is also an accelerated 5-core GPU with 50 per cent more memory bandwidth and a new 16-core Neural Engine capable of nearly 17 trillion operations per second.

“Fundamental to the pro camera system, A16 Bionic powers incredible computational photography features,” Apple aid. “The CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, and image signal processor seamlessly work together to support the new camera hardware and perform up to 4 trillion operations per photo.”

As rumours initially speculated (and much like its predecessor) the new Apple iPhone 14 and Apple iPhone 14 Plus will run on the tech company’s A15 bionic chip. Last year’s major development, the A15 makes use of 5-nanometre technology, delivering nearly 15 billion transistors to tackle demanding tasks. We noted at the iPhone 13 launch last year that while that might not mean much to the average user, it’s a major boost for everyday use. Apple says the new 6-core CPU comes with two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores, making it up to 50 per cent faster than the competition, the fastest in any smartphone.

As expected, Apple has plugged the new devices’ 5G connectivity and outlined a few key features of 1OS 16. We previously noted the enhancements to the Lock Screen, sharing and intelligence features but it really looks like the new operating system will come to life on the iPhone 14, particularly with the Pro and Pro Max models. Similarly, Apple reaffirmed its commitment to the environment, revealing that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are made with 100 per cent recycled rare earth elements used in all magnets, including those used in MagSafe, and 100 per cent recycled tungsten in the Taptic Engine. Both models also include 100 per cent recycled tin in the solder of multiple printed circuit boards, and 100 per cent recycled gold in the plating of multiple printed circuit boards and in the wire of all cameras.

Crash Detection

Outside of the general performance scope and design upgrades, there were two features that really caught our attention. According to Apple, the entire iPhone 14 lineup is copping a new dual-core accelerometer that is capable of detecting G-force measurements of up to 256Gs. Furthermore, the new high dynamic range gyroscope allows Crash Detection on iPhone to identify a severe car crash and automatically dial emergency services when a user is unconscious or unable to reach their iPhone.

“When combined with Apple Watch, Crash Detection seamlessly leverages the unique strength of both devices to get users to help efficiently,” Apple said. “When a severe crash is detected, the emergency services call interface will appear on Apple Watch, as it is most likely to be in closer proximity to the user, while the call is placed through iPhone if it is in range for the best possible connection.”
