Samsung turned heads and grabbed headlines when it announced the Galaxy Fold, but they’re not the only game in town. Enter Huawei’s Mate X, which made a grand splash at MWC 2019, and wasted no time in stealing a sizable chunk of Samsung’s thunder. In fact, many are saying that Huawei’s foldable 5G gadget—with its impressively thin body and outward facing display—is the clear winner among the two.
When unfolded, the Huawei Mate X functions as an 8″ tablet with an immersive OLED display. Fold the device over and it becomes a premium smartphone. Features include a redesigned Leica camera system, powerful battery, lightning-fast charging speeds, and 5G network connectivity.
Bolstered by a Falcon Wing design, the Huawei Mate X swings on an innovative stretchable hinge, which dissolves into the surface to deliver a flat finish. It also guarantees that the screen won’t overstretch when folding or bulge in the unfolded position.
Aside from the variables in thickness, the primary difference between the Galaxy Fold and Mate X is that the former folds inwards while the latter folds outwards. For the Mate X, that might result in a more appealing aesthetic but it also leaves the display vulnerable to potential damage. Nitpicking aside, both gadgets are living proof that there’s plenty of room for innovation in the world of mobile devices.
