Samsung Galaxy S23 Australia: Release Date, Price, Features Revealed

At its yearly Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung unveiled the latest additions to its flagship smartphone series. Aside from the 200MP image sensor that was rumoured to feature in the Galaxy S23 Ultra and a transition away from the rectangular shell that encased the rear camera lenses on the Galaxy S23 and S23+, the lineup received only minor updates. But that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in capabilities. The Samsung Galaxy Series is still the top contender to the Apple iPhone and arguably one of the most popular, if not the best, Android smartphone series on the market today. Keep reading to find out what you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy S23, release dates, pricing, and all the updated and innovative features.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Announcement

“The value of impactful technology is measured, not just by what it enables for people today, but also how it contributes to a better future,” said TM Roh, president and head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. Clearly, Samsung has a vision of what they expect from the modern smartphone. “The entire Galaxy S23 series is the new standard-bearer of trustworthy premium smartphone experiences”, continued Roh. “We’re on a mission to redefine peak performance by bringing together powerful, lasting innovations and sustainability.”

Samsung Galaxy S23 Design and Display

S23 Ultra

This year’s flagship release features a flatter design that addresses user issues about the curved screen edges of its predecessors. The S23 Ultra boasts a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x Infinity-O QHD+ touchscreen with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and a maximum brightness of 1,750 nits. Underneath the gorgeous display (including the S23 and S23+) is an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for biometric identification; however, facial recognition will also be available for accessing your data and apps. There’s also the included S Pen for taking notes with the Samsung S23 Ultra.

The brand-new “Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy” inside the Galaxy S23 Ultra, dubbed “the most powerful and efficient platform ever for the brand”, allows for up to 12GB of RAM, up to 1TB of storage, and 5G connectivity, all powered by an internal 5,000mAh battery with wireless PowerShare and fast charging.

S23 and S23+

Featuring similar designs to the Ultra and the same Gen 2 Snapdragon chipset, the Galaxy S23+ has a 6.6-inch Dynamic FHD+ AMOLED screen, while the Galaxy S23’s display measures 6.1 inches. Both offer an adjustable refresh rate of 120Hz and a maximum brightness of 1,750. The S23+ has slightly more juice at 4,500mAh compared to the 3,900mAh inside the S23. Hopefully, the new chipset will eliminate the S22 Ultra battery issue that plagued Samsung last year.

Also under the hood is the Samsung Galaxy Enhanced Comfort feature that allows users to alter the colour tones and contrast levels to alleviate eye fatigue during nighttime screen use and better handle brightness and glare in the daytime. Moreover, the Samsung Vision Booster feature now adapts to three illumination levels instead of two.

Display Sizes

  • Samsung Galaxy S23 – 6.1-inches
  • Samsung Galaxy S23+ – 6.6-inches
  • Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra – 6.8-inches

Battery

  • Samsung Galaxy S23 – 3,900mAh
  • Samsung Galaxy S23+ – 4,700mAh
  • Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra – 5,000mAh

Sustainability

From six internal components in the Galaxy S22 Ultra to 12 interior and exterior elements in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy has boosted its usage of recycled materials, with the S23 becoming the first  UL ECOLOGO certified Samsung smartphone for reduced environmental impact.

More recyclable materials than any other Galaxy smartphone are used in the Galaxy S23 series, including post-consumer recycled plastics made from used fishing nets, PET bottles, and water barrels, as well as pre-and post-consumer recycled glass and aluminium, with an average of 22% pre-consumer recycled material

Additionally, each Galaxy S23 smartphone is packaged in a new box that uses paper that is 100 per cent recycled. Plus, the use of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for the S series offers enhanced durability for prolonged usage. And on the software side, users can expect a “sustained” experience with four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates, alongside the option for Samsung Care+ for support services, repairs and more.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Camera

It seems only yesterday that Samsung unveiled their 200MP image sensor for future flagship smartphones. And now they’re finally here! Featured in the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, the new 200MP Adaptive Pixel will help users capture spectacular moments with remarkable accuracy. Underpinning the technology is concurrent high-resolution processing, known as pixel binning, which enables far greater auto-focusing capabilities and improved performance in low-light environments. And as the cherry on top, all rear cameras can capture 8K video at 30 frames per second, with a broader viewing angle.

The Galaxy S23 series also adds quick focusing and our first Super HDR selfie camera, moving from 30fps to 60fps, for considerably superior front-facing photos and movies since selfie cameras are now more crucial than ever in how we communicate. The recognisable Samsung Galaxy camera also receives an upgrade on the Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23. The removal of the contoured casing heralds a new era in Galaxy design that sets the entire series apart.

Performance

With the brand-new “Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy,” the most powerful and effective platform ever in a Samsung Galaxy smartphone and the quickest Snapdragon currently on the market, Samsung and Qualcomm optimised the Samsung Galaxy experience. A bigger camera than the Galaxy S22 Ultra is powered by a 5000mAh battery in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which keeps the device’s size the same.

As real-time ray tracing enters the mainstream of mobile gaming, the Galaxy S23 Ultra features technology that mimics and records practically every light ray for like-like simulations. Additionally, the larger vapour chamber on every Galaxy S23 series model from Samsung keeps your long gaming session going.

Processing Power

The processor power of the Galaxy S23 series is increased by around 30% compared to the Galaxy S22 series, thanks to a newly developed CPU microarchitecture. To balance performance and power while utilising an AI algorithm to assist users in taking incredible images and videos, Samsung Galaxy’s extremely efficient NPU architecture has been optimised by 49%. Capturing amazing photos in low light needs billions of computations per second. The optimised GPU in the Galaxy S23 series, which is around 41% quicker than the GPU in the Galaxy 22 series and was created specifically for power users, is one of the most notable upgrades.

Galaxy Book Connectivity

Samsung unveiled several new laptops at Galaxy Unpacked in addition to the new Galaxy S23 line of smartphones. The 14-inch and 16-inch Galaxy Book 3 Pros, the 2-in-1 convertible Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360, and the line’s flagship model, the Galaxy Book 3 Pro Ultra (clearly aimed at the Apple MacBook Pro), are all part of the Galaxy Book 3 Pro series. Unfortunately, Australia isn’t slated to receive these computers at this time.

The Verdict

Put simply, the new Samsung Galaxy S23 delivers everything you could want in a flagship smartphone, but it does feel as though we’ve hit a bit of a wall. The technology is fantastic, the processing power has copped a much-needed upgrade and Samsung has adorned this release with a monster sensor to ensure best-in-class photography capabilities. On paper, it’s certainly an enticing offer and a large enough jump for existing Galaxy users to make the upgrade, but at a price point that is pushing AUD$2,700, the top-tier S23 Ultra may be out of reach for many users.
