  • OMEGA launched two new 42 mm Speedmaster Moonwatch models for 2026.
  • The watches feature a lacquered “reverse panda” appearance.
  • Choose between stainless steel or OMEGA’s premium 18K Moonshine Gold.
  • The Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 movement powers these watches.

OMEGA has been holding onto the motorsport-inspired “reverse panda” dial for some years. Trend forecasts said that the watch brand would add the popular colourway to its permanent dial lineup years ago, but the brand remained firm in its assertion, refusing to include the dial on a watch with a history rooted not in motorsport, but in outer space.

Well, every brand has to cave eventually, and the winner here is the watch enthusiast because these two new references in Stainless Steel (AUD$16,400) and Moonshine Gold (AUD$77,725) are utterly gorgeous.

Where this watch stands out from the limited-release panda dials of the past (2017 Speedy Tuesday limited edition comes to mind) is the dual-plate construction, which splits the lacquered main dial and subdials into two separate layers, creating a visual separation that adds depth and complexity to the piece. When you add in rhodium-plated hands and applied indices found on the stainless steel model, the result is a surprisingly dressy Speedy that will surely make a name for itself as one of the most sought-after of the year, before the watch events have even occurred. Well done, OMEGA.

Movement

Powered by the manual‑winding OMEGA CoAxial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, the new Speedmaster Moonwatch in Black and White has the “most advanced evolution” of the famous Calibre 321 that NASA astronauts trusted on the Moon under its skin.

It’s an impressive movement, powering the small seconds sub-dial, 30-minute recorder, 12-hour recorder, and central chronograph function. Despite these functions, it boasts a power reserve of 50 hours, and as a Master Chronometer-certified movement, its accuracy is officially guaranteed to be within 0 to +5 seconds per day.

Design

We dislike nicknames as much as the next watch enthusiast, but there’s no denying the internet’s infatuation with all things “panda” dials, and the “reverse panda” dial that OMEGA has introduced here is destined to be a sure-fire hit amongst collectors, but also bring plenty of new fans to the brand.

The nickname “reverse panda” originates from the black dial and contrasting white sub-dials and isn’t unique to OMEGA watches. Still, when a brand adopts the Moonwatch’s essential step dial, which is crafted with a double plate, it adds a layer of depth that other watches simply can’t achieve. Here, you’ll find a top plate in polished black, and the varnished and lacquered finish produces a superior sheen that must be seen to be appreciated. Structurally, it includes a rhodium-plated subdial frame. Meanwhile, the base layer for the subdials is produced in white, also with a varnished and lacquered finish.

Both models feature a highly legible minute track, transferred in white on the main dial and black on the subdials. The 42 mm case size is standard for a Speedmaster Moonwatch, as is the 5 bar (50 metres / 165 feet) of water resistance and the display caseback.
