If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be the shark from Jaws, you’re in luck. Tripwire Interactive has just released its new RPG-game Maneater, where you assume the role of a female bull shark. But this isn’t just a game where you eat people and smell blood in the water, this is a tale of revenge.
According to reports, the game centres around survival. The general premise is that you must play through an open world to exact revenge on the fisherman who not only disfigured you as a pup, but also killed your mother. While it’s an insane concept that offers a lot of brutal enjoyment, you might think the game would get old quick, but Tripwire president John Gibson said there was more to the game than meets the eye.
Speaking at the E3 event in 2019, where fans were treated to early footage of the single-player action RPG, he reportedly likened the game to a well-known favourite. “The story of Maneater is told through the lens of a reality show called ‘Sharkhunters versus Maneaters’. It’s like GTA if you were a shark,” he said according to GamesRadar. There is an element of growth throughout the game, which comes through eating things, presumably people which essentially adds XP to your character. As your shark grows, you level up and she becomes more powerful.
But don’t feel too bad for the fisherman facing the imminent onslaught. “Pete is the best fisherman in the gulf, he’ll tell you he’s the best shark fisherman,” Gibson said. “He disfigures our baby shark at the beginning of the game, and he does some really nasty things, so he’s not a very nice guy.” If that doesn’t get you going then perhaps the additional voiceover work done by Chris Parnell, famous for playing Jerry in Rick and Morty will.
Maneater is out now on PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows (via the Epic Games store) and Xbox One. It will also be released later this year on Nintendo Switch.
