Post-Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan is Already Prepping His Next Project

Riding the wave of his historic double win at the 2024 Oscars for both Best Director and Best Picture for Oppenheimer, visionary director Christopher Nolan isn’t taking a break and is already onto his next project. Per Variety, the director behind iconic works like the Dark Knight trilogy, Tenet, Inception and Interstellar is gearing up to helm a new project. Nolan has reportedly expressed willingness to explore diverse genres, considering everything from entirely new concepts to remakes or adaptations, as long as they’re original to him.

Puck recently revealed that Nolan has “already started writing” his next feature. While the publication didn’t confirm the movie‘s subject, Nolan has previously expressed interest in the horror genre. He has even discussed the challenge of crafting a successful horror film, noting the necessity of “a really exceptional idea” and acknowledging he hasn’t yet found the perfect narrative.

“Ideas come from everywhere. I’ve done a remake, I’ve made adaptations from comic books and novels, and I’ve written original screenplays. I’m open to anything. But as a writer and director, whatever I do, I have to feel like I own it completely. I have to make it original to me: The initial seed of an idea may come from elsewhere, but it has to go through my fingers on a keyboard and come out through my eyes alone,” Nolan told Variety.

Some reports also suggest Christopher Nolan’s next project could be a remake of ‘The Prisoner,’ a cult British mystery series known for its blend of Cold War intrigue and surrealism. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast before Oppenheimer’s release, Nolan was asked if he’d consider tackling The Prisoner. Nolan acknowledged he hadn’t settled on his next project, stating, “I wouldn’t wanna say anything about what I’m gonna do next… because the truth is I haven’t figured it out.”

Additionally, Nolan’s admiration for the James Bond franchise is also well-known and it wouldn’t be surprising if he ends up directing the new reboot. Even Nolan previously discussed the possibility of directing a 007 film, but later clarified that there’s “no truth” to rumours of his official attachment to the project.

While speaking to Yahoo Entertainment late last year, Nolan shared his desire to move on from such a dark and nihilistic topic and explore a lighter theme. He stated, “I definitely– part of me wants to leave the story behind. I mean, you know, it’s a great privilege to be able to talk about a film that you’ve made that’s now going into the home and on 4k and Blu-ray and all the rest. It’s great to be able to sit here and talk to you about the success of the movie. That’s a huge privilege. But the subject matter is very dark. It’s nihilistic. And, yeah, there’s part of me that’s quite keen to move on and maybe do something, you know, not quite as bleak.”
